First off, let me state that I'm not much of a mechanic. Beyond fluid changes and some DIY stuff, I'm clueless. That's why when I bought my '94 J30, the first thing I did was search out this forum and begin to ask questions.

I knew when I bought my car, that the timing belt needed service. So I asked around on the board and got some great tips from a bunch of people on how to approach a problem that I had no idea at the time was so significant.

Two days ago, I took my car into the only Infiniti shop here in Denver, the Infiniti dealer (again, more good advice from this forum on where to go), and today I got it back after having the following done....

Timing belt replacedTiming belt tensioner replacedWater pump assembly replacedSeals checked and servicedFan, power steering, and compression belts replaced

I wouldn't have known to ask ahead about some of these things without help from around here, and, because of this forum, I had a good idea of what the costs were going to be before I even picked up the phone.

The mechanic did all the work very professionally, and let me know that there was nothing else wrong that he could see, and that I was good to go until my 120k mile service.

So now I've got the car back, and without exageration, I can say it runs like it's brand new. No more fluttering in the engine, the acceleration is strong. It's amazing.

And I have to thank everyone here for helping me get it all together.

Thanks again.

ok, well, it wasn't cheap...459 in parts, 612 in labor, for a total of 1107.00 . I was told around here it would be 7-8 for the timing belt and tensioner alone, then throw in the water pump...

But if Im basing it on a cost-satisfaction ratio, it was money well spent.

Here are the pics I just uploaded to the gallery..

Made some calls today because I'm thinking about buying a dealer-maintained 94 J with a new factory transmission:

Timing belt, Timing belt tensioner, and Water pump = $750 was the quote I got at Creve Coeur Firestone on Olive Blvd for a 94 J.

Seems like you will be worry free if you get that J with a new transmission. How much is the asking price?

Well, that's a good price. Thanks for rubbing it in that I may have overpaid. But then again, I payed what I payed at the only Infinti specialist shop in Denver.

That's one nice J! As far as having the timing belt and stuff changed I had that done at T3 for about $600 last month.

Omar:

I got him down to $2300, it drives beautifully, looks great (http://q.spilky.com/j30). Problem is, I'm STILL waiting on the state to send me my new title so I can sell my Q.And then there's the emotional vs. practical conflict. I love my Q more than anything, but I simply cant afford to do chain guides this year. But a J30 would at least keep me partially satisfied until I bought another Q (94+) next year, and not have to risk blowing my Q engine and losing 3 grand.

Thats a smart way of thinking through things. Why dont get this J and keep it as a DD even when you get your Q?

I plan to get a Q sometime in the future when my budget isnt tight and am done with school. However, when I do, I will still keep my J (as long as I am able to do so financially). I love that car and its so fun to drive.

Sure its no Q, but you'll have fun with the J.

Good luck,

- Omar
