From CNN:

A Christian woman has been sentenced to death for blasphemy in Pakistan, two police officials told CNN Thursday.

Asia Bibi was convicted of insulting Islam's prophet, Mohammed, while working in a field with several Muslim women in a village southwest of Lahore.

She told them the Quran was "fake" and made comments about one of Mohammed's wives and about his health in his final days, the police complaint against her said.

She said that "the Quran is fake and your prophet remained in bed for one month before his death because he had worms in his ears and mouth. He married Khadija just for money and after looting her kicked her out of the house," local police official Muhammad Ilyas told CNN.

The initial complaint against Bibi was filed on June 14, 2009, by a Muslim cleric, Ilyas said. Police say the Muslim women reported the incident to Qari Muhammad Salim, who later filed the police report. The cleric claims Bibi confessed to him and apologized.

Muhammad Iqbal, a senior police official in the district of Nankana Sahib, said she also was fined the equivalent of $1,100.

Police say Bibi was charged with breaking section 295-C of Pakistan's penal code, which says: "Whoever ... defiles the sacred name of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) shall be punished with death, or imprisonment for life, and shall also be liable to fine."

Former Pakistani Supreme Court Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid told CNN he doesn't recall a death sentence ever being carried against someone convicted of breaking Pakistan's anti-blasphemy laws. Death sentences in these cases are almost always overturned by higher courts on appeal, he said.

Death sentences are carried out by hanging in Pakistan.

Sounds to me like someone could use some separation of church and state. ;)

Agreed....this is why I say, until Islam can achieve this seperation in all nations where its the dominant religion, then Islam is always gonna have a foul connotation.

Even though I am a Muslim, yes, I agree that church and state separation is very, very important. Else you end up with "criticism against the government" being read as "criticism against the religion" ... which becomes heresy! Argh.

Unfortunately, this is not the case in those countries today ... :(

And, within Islam, religion and politics and, indeed, way-of-life is intertwined ... far too much. It would be tough to change these aspects.

That necessity is also something that scares me about the Christian far right in this country, too. I see way too much of them wanting our government to be that way here.

I wish they would learn from the examples from other countries (and other religions) of how it does not work out well. Church-state separation is very important ...

It shouldn't "scare" you, and if it does, you've missed the fact that we're based on checks and balances.

We're free to speak our mind about our beliefs without fear of reprisal from the State. As Z stated, many other countries are NOT.

Yet, the Left still defends their "way of life".

Who's the REAL human rights advocate here? :poke:

from a purely tactical standpoint, Bibi is smarter than most american presidents. he has yet to budge an inch on what he wants in the face of immense international pressure, and unprecedented US anger.

Ummm, Bibi is a "she".

And you're right - her conviction is impressive.

AZ- I think you missed MY point. Those far right Christians may be held up by checks and balances now, but too many of them would like to be the next dictatorial group running a religious based government here. What scares me is that they might just get enough power and money to pull it off. I'm losing faith rapidly in our system of checks and balances.

Pfft.

If it didn't happen in the 40's, 50's or 60's, what makes you think it'd happen now?

Dude, the evangelicals are getting their asses kicked left and right. We can't even have a "moment of silence" before grade school classes or a damn Christmas tree on the lawn, and you're worried about "dictatorial Christians"?

Conspiratorial concerns are conspiratorial.

You'd better be more worried about the OTHER extreme.

Did someone say Isra- oh, dammit, Greg.

When the moderates lost to Bibi, some suggested that this might actually be the obstructionist to prompt real action the next time around.

I'm with ya. However, this is the "extreme du jour". The other end of the spectrum isn't doing much these days.
