By Larry Copeland, USA TODAYThe nation's top legal driving speed soon could rise to a long-forbidden 80 mph as Texas moves toward increasing the limit on parts of two interstate highways.

Definitely a step in the right direction!

Yep, anyone who has ever driven between El Paso and just about any Texas city east of there can attest to the fact that it is a L-O-O-O-O-N-G, boring drive - with about 2 curves every 500 miles - Makes ya want to set the cruise control, climb in the back seat and take a nap until you finally run into something...

Not to toot my own horn or anything, but ya gotta love a state that (1.) allows motorists to drive 80 MPH, and (2.) allows them to carry loaded handguns in their vehicles while doing it...

Haha, that'd be nice....though I don't know if raising the speed limit will really encourage that many more people to speed out there...at least not during the hot summers. From what I saw dirving through Texas, NM and AZ boonies, even when the limit was 75 during the daytime, not too many people were going over it probably b/c you'd overheat with the temps in the triple digits. I've had to make the Houston to Cali trip 7 times, and have unfortunately burned out two trannies doing it. Damn Benz. Though the Q did make it from Houston to LA, carrying 4 people and a bunch of luggage, without breaking much of a sweat...other than an overheated ABS relay.

Speed limits on local fwy's here are 65, and they're 75 anywhere remotely rural. However, you can drive 85 all day long in a 65 and not worry about getting pulled over. I love driving in L.A. (traffic permitting of course) and we have access to the most fun drives on earth, mile after mile of twisty canyon roads right at our fingertips.

I wish local highways here were 65, we're stuck going 55!!! When you do run into a 65 mph highway people act like it's the Autobahn, lol. On a off note, what's up with people in Accords and Maximas always trying to out run Qs????

It's one of the reasons I left MD to begin with! I miss my family and friends there but 55 everywhere, and the most nazi police I've ever seen. I left there in 1996 with 12 points and a revoked license, I swear I got pulled over every other month wether I was actually speeding or not. Whenever I visit my parents if I have to drive somewhere I'm a nervous wreck, those State Troopers have nothing to do but sit at speed traps. And the worst thing is you guys have some of the smoothest roads anywhere!!! Knock on wood, but in the 10 years I've been in L.A. now, I've had ONE speeding ticket.

MD State Troopers/nazi cops are the worse!!!! I just went to court last Tuesday for doing 78 in a 55. $145 and 2 points, so I go to court figuring to get the fine reduced and most importantly the points. Court was supposed to start at 8:45, 9:10 rolls around and they inform us, our judge is out cold with the flu or some b.s. and we get a replacement judge. I was the fourth name called and who decided to step in the court room..... the damn state trooper that pulled me over. I plead guily got off with $100 no points. Now i'm was happy with that until, I got out in the parking lot and saw 20 or so people leaving the courthouse, come to find out none of the other state troopers came to court so the judge threw all there cases out Now had court started on time, I too would have had mine cases dismissed, gotta love MD though

Amen!! I love Mulholland Dr. on a clear day or night. I also dig Latigo cyn off of Kanan all the way to PHC or the other way around (PCH to Latigo and then Kanan to the 101). Man... I can go on and on.
