I never knew that you can test a cataltic converter. Here's one way of doing it:

The article indicates that cat. temps will be between 600 and 900 degrees. I would think the difficult part is going to be finding an infrared thermometer that can measure that range for a reasonable price. A quick google search found a bunch that measure up to 4-500. Any higher and I bet the price jumps accordingly.

Tail pipe Emission test first often saves lots of work..........then evaluate the results.

The 90-93 cats were extremely ROBUST, redesigned in 94-95 and again in 1996 for obd2.
