I think he just might have lost the battle with the tree. The steering wheel had a spot where it caved in presumably from the drivers head, and the engine was like 10-15 feet away.

Airbags don't deploy unless it is a front end collision. It would be usless in a side impact.
Did you read down that thread on the VW forum. Someone asks why did they let someone drive it. I don't think I could buy a brand new car w/o driving it. That is alot of $$ to drop on something you might not like. I can understand on a motorcycle a little, but I would still want to drive it.

i feel bad for the r32 future owner. i wouldn't pass it off that someone in a different country to buy it and repair it. when i worked for a nissan dealer a few russian guys would buy all the totaled pathfinders.
but for the two in the a3. how fst would a car have to be going for that type of collision to happen? man that car was torn to pieces.
