I would love to have open exhaust for the track event AZFerrell and I are participating in Feb 10th.

What would be the easiest way?

I was thinking have a pipe made at an exhaust shop that I can bolt in where the cats go that will direct the exhaust out right there?

What are these test pipes I keep hearing about? They are just straight pipe that bolts in place of the cats?

Thanks,

Jeff

yes. they're just straight pipes that replace the cats. they'll throw a check engine light on your car but it should be fine when you put your old ones back on. you might have to reset the ECU if the CEL doesn't go off by unplugging the battery for about 5 minutes.

i've got a set in my garage but i don't think they'll fit an 07.

they're a good way to gain 6-8 hp. mine are VERY hard to put on, though.

if you're going to run it on the track than i'd just take the cats out and not put anything in their place. you'll bypass the exhaust an muffler and get some REAL HP!

I am about to buy a set.

What brand do you have that are hard to install? What makes the install so difficult?

O2 sims will not always eliminate the CEL. (Corrected, please see below)You can also modify spark plug anti-foulers to prevent the CEL.

I have also seen spacers specifically made to eliminate CELs, instead of modifying the anti-foulers.

O2 sims do not work on 2001+ cars. The sims return a constant voltage in the range of the 02's voltage. Newer cars will run lean and then rich on purpose to test cat efficency and they sim will not return the correct values when the car does this. You will pop 0420/0430 codes about every 40-60 miles depending on how many times you start and stop the motor.

I have set of sims I will mail you 4 free if you want to try them but they will not work.

The spark plug anti foulers do work although sometimes you have to put a small ball of tin foil in them to make them trick the computer.

I wonder how hard it would be to take a set of test pipes and bend them 45 degrees or so? I'd like to have open pipe off the exhaust manifold pointed out the side of the car. Elimiting backpressure always gains power but you can move torque up the RPM band to an unuseable RPM.

I had 5 different exhaust systems on my ram the fastest was long tube headers with glass packs right off the header and nothing after that. I had to add pipe and loose some power because I was getting CO2 in the cab.

I may just disconnect the bolts from the exhaust manifold collector and run like that! Since I'll just be doing it for the track. I will have to let the car cool completely before and after though. I also need to look at what might be melted by venting 1600 degree exhause right off the manifold LOL

Thanks,

Jeff

precision93: i got these pipes - http://stores.channeladvisor.c...10186

they were the cheapest ones i could find because i wasn't sure if i was going to install them (CEL and failing emissions).

the install is hard because of the location of 2 bolts on each cat. they're VERY hard to get to with normal tools.

i've heard of all of the tricks to use to and none of them are %100.

gwoods: i went to pep boys not too long ago and they have cheap little elbow joints that you can bolt on that will point the exhaust away from the cabin.

Test pipes can be nice, I had a straight pipe and headers once... until I failed emmissions... I would caution you... I will add at least 7db at full throtle... And the car will be vibrating and stuff... should be sweet!!! Also... to Jeff Woods... I like your drag movie... I want to run my 04 sedan next year... did you have to get a roll cage???thanks in advance...

In the US we have NHRA rules that govern most tracks. If you do not have a power adder (Nitrous, Supercharger, Turbo Charger) your car will pass as follows,

14.0 and slower (your probably here)Don't have anything loose in the trunk or cabin, stock seatbelts work, no fluid leaks, radiator overflow tank and battery hold down, decent tires. Basically a stock car or minor bolt on mods. You don't need anything else.

13.99-11.50SNELL 1997 + is required

11.49-10 (I think)Full NHRA inspected and stamped cage, fire suit... maybe on board fire fighting system... I can't remember it all. If your running faster then 11.49 you should already know what your doing.

Follow the tracks spotters hand signals... this is the easiest way to get kicked out. Follow the speed limit most are 5 mph everywhere but the strip. If something breaks stop where you are... EVERYONE will hate you if you track any fluid down the track. A busted hose can end the night for everyone. I've seen beatings handed out over that LOL

Below is a link to the track I visit about once a month.... lots of infohttp://www.speedworlddragstrip.com/trackrules.asp

chad1200: Is the quality decent on the pipes you bought. That is the best price I have seen without going to e-bay and am about to order a set.

I also did not know that about the O2 sims. Good info.

Before you drive on a public road without a cat you might consider that it is a state and federal offense. The fine can be as much as $2,500.00 for doing so (driving on a public highway with a modified emission system) Instead of risking that, look into high flow cats. They can flow just as much exhaust and keep you within the rules.

In 1990 I had an EU and a NS license in California. I was licensed me to inspect, test and repair emission equipment under the BAR 90 standard. I can assure you that high flow cats are the way to go, they are legal and within 1 or 2 HP of a full off road pipe.

See http://www.epa.gov/Compliance/...l.pdf(penalties of $25,000 for dealer or $2,500 for individual who tampers with vehicle emission system). That is just the Fed, the state can, and probably will have other penalties, plus the officer can have your car tow to the nearest licensed inspection facility for inspection if you are caught. You will not be allowed to drive your car until it is fixed, not even to a repair station. It must be towed. Not to mention you’ll have to buy new cats (can’t use your old ones as they are used and that is illegal) and pay to have them installed, and there will be no sympathy for you here either. Can’t do it yourself unless you are licensed and own/work at a licensed repair shop.

Can they catch you? Yes, easily. Will they, not as likely. Although, In California they have mobile stations (they look like little white trailers and a few mirrors.) that they setup beside the freeway on ramps that measure exhaust emissions as you accelerate up the ramp. If you are dirty, they photo photo your license plate which leads to a letter from the CARB and an inspection. They look for signs of tampering, which are really easy to spot. That device is going to become more popular in other states.

Seriously, if it is for and at the track, you're legal. If you drive on a public street, you're taking a chance.

rn79870,

Good info... Arizona has those mobile sniffers too.

I did start out saying my exhaust system was for the track. I don't want that loud an exhaust on my G35.

My truck had no cats for about a year I had police follow me all the time and ride my bumper trying to make me speed but no one ever asked about my emissions system. I did get a $85 ticket for blue license plate lights and having a clear plasitc cover over my license plate.

My 3rd car is a 1965 CJ-5 emissions exempt!

My buddy had a 1976 Camaro. We built a small block 400 for it and it just barely passed. We changed out the cam and worked over the heads. It failed. It was a nightmare.... you had to apply for a 30 day permit. Then make changes with new parts. Then bring it back, show your receipts. Pay for the inspection... it would fail. Then you had to pay for another 30 day permit. Finally he ran out of money and 30 day permits and parked it..... he sold it last October for $300

Kept the motor out of it although the antifreeze and oil had ruined the motor.

Jeff
