I drove a Xterra today for my sister-in-law.She is getting out of her 95 Explorer and I pointed her in the right direction(to a Nissan/Infiniti product).

I was a supercharged version and drove very nicely, however the check engine light was on. How big of a deal is this? It has about 33K miles on it and the price isn't bad. The dealer who had no clue about the Xterra said it was no biggie and they would take care of it. He also said that they had only had it for a week or so and it had not been through their 101 point inspection yet.

hard to say what it coulkd be there are so many things that can trip them. If you had alot lower miles I would suggest possibly a P1491 fuel cut valve which is pretty common to those. another one is the O2 sensor[about 8 to 10 possible P01xx] codes due to water getting into the connectors on the right hand valve cover[ unplugging them and checking for moisture is the easiest way to tell] P0455 Evap gross leak is another common one [due to people leaving the gas cap loose or getting the teather caught under the cap. Those are all the pretty popular ones there is probably a couple I missed that are common other then that there is probably another 200 possible codes that could of poped up each one of them having 2 to 6 or so possible causes.

Would using a gas with too low of octane cause it? The sales guy went to get gas in it and then came back with like $2.00 in it. The low fuel light came on while I was test driving it.

no octane wont set the light but the fact he just got gas suggests he left the gas cap loose or caught the teather under it.

BTW If you dont use supreme in it the SC will go into bypass mode and not provide any boost.

I know this thread is old but just throwing in my info. My parents have an '03 supercharged xterra and the truck's check engine like would come on every once in a while for no reason. Each time she brought it in they told her it was the same problem, the gas cap needed to be turned a certain amount of clicks after it stops turning to ensure it's on tight so the check engine light wouldn't go on. She brought it in 3 or 4 times and they kept telling her the same thing. Whenever I filled it up i spun the gas cap an entire turn with it clicking and it still triggered the check engine light. Turns out the problem was with the ecu software making the light come on and it was fixed/updated under warranty and it doesn't happen anymore. So see if that's the problem.
