Hey guys,

I tried a search, hopefully this hasn't already been covered. I test drove a 96 Maxima with a 5-speed and about 135k miles. I liked the car a lot, but 1st gear made this strange noise, almost like when your power steering is low on fluid but it happened when going straight both accelerating and decelerating. It reminded me of when you have a manual transmission and you put the car into reverse and accelerate quickly, there is kind of a gear noise.

My question is, is this normal? Anyone else experienced it? Should I walk away from the car? Thanks!

Does it make the noise while driving in 1st gear, shifting to 1st, or when letting the clutch out into 1st?

i'd walk away. there is nothing that should sound like the car going in reverse while accelerating in 1st. the reason reserve is so loud is it's a flat cut gear vs angled.
