i have a 2002 nissan pathfinder 4x4 with 105,000 miles. mostly city drivingi have a check engine code of P1456

ive been getting terrible gas mileage, less than 10 mpg.ive replaced my air filter , fuel filter pcv valve , spark plugs.i drive modest , i dont press the gas all the way down all the time.what can i do to improve gas mileage?when i first got this car [ 20,000 miles] the fuel economy was alot better than this, do i need to replace anything , what can i do?

P1456 is basically your gas cap lost pressure. I have that on my pathy to and it doesn't change fuel mileage .Couple things to do -

-Tire pressure--Alignment-Clean out TB-Check if your MAF is working( Dont bother cleaning it. Doesn't fix it)-If your got some spare money take it to a dealer and get the codes read(some ob2 cant read dealer codes like mine)

My 02 takes about 20.5L for 100km 95% city and i drive it hard once in a while.

Clean it with Tb cleaner and My MAF code didn't come up. I went into a dealer and got it scanned. Did you replace with OEM Gas cap or aftermarket?

Try seafoam to clean out the Fuel injectors and use high mileage oil .Doesn't burn much as conventional

I have about the same mileage (110,000) on my qx4. In summer I'd get around 290 or 300 miles to a tank. Now I get around 230 miles/tank. I just replaced my tires and got them aligned several weeks ago-- no difference in gas mileage.

I'm wondering if it has to do with the wintertime changes in gas formulations?

there is seriously something wrong if your only getting 120 miles per tank...I'd almost suspect a leak! either that or you have way too heavy of a foot

I got an average of 250 miles on a full tank but i spend almost an hour in go and stop traffic each day.

When i drive without any heavy traffic - i get an around 275 on a full tank.

Also, this is including 350+ lbs of music in truck.

towncarblue, if you get your mileage increased, can you share the result and what was done to the vehicle? (I'm disappointed in my wintertime mileage per tank and want to get it up a bit closer to my summertime).

Also, the dealer told me that in the winter, when possible, use the 'econ' for heating because the 'auto' is just like running the air conditioning.

Is anyone else seeing a drop in their miles per tank from summer to winter? If not, then something must be wrong with my car ...

My MPG has been about the same over the seven years. Lowest is a little below 15 MPH with all city drive and a bit heavy foot. Highest is close to 19 MPG with all hiway drive at 70~80 MPG.

Mostly it is ~ 15.5 MPG city and hiway combined. No difference is observed between summer and winter.

Two weeks ago I brought home my first '02 pathfinder SE 5-speed.I've burned 124 litres or 32¾ US gallons (as of my latest fill-up).I traveled 915 Kilometres or 572miles. I'd say 80% were highway miles.

My last car was a '96 civic which I drove for 12 years/389231km, so to me I thought my mileage was terrible!

civic gets 34mpgpathy gets 17½mpg

After writing this post i realize it's not as rough on fuel as i thought thanks!

PS. I used to think the winter mileage was appreciably less. It would seem as though the summer gas would get me ~600km per ~40L, then, one day, at the end of October, I'd fill up and 40L would only get me 550km. every tank until spring it would seem. The gauge on the civic stopped working 6 years ago. I reset the tripometer every fill-up. The fuel light still works so i always tanked when it came on.

I was driver/training at one time for a bulk fuel (gas and diesel) transport company. I asked my trainer if they change the gas formula in the winter. He insisted that NO they do not (for what it's worth).

IMO it's the foul weather that taxes our winter mileage. It is windier, rainier (in November and April). Forget about the snowy days, slopping and spinning. Not to mention some extra idle time warming it up.

The Pathfinder has something like a 21 gallon tank and I used to average about 300 miles per tank. For some reason, lately I've been getting really bad gas mileage. The other day I put in a half tank and I burned it in one day (I drove about 50 miles); granted I was in 4Hi for some of it (maybe 15 miles) but this is really bad. I know my car is in great shape and I keep it maintained quite well (oil changes < 3000 miles) so I don't really know what is goin on.

Summer I get 270-280 a tank just as the low fuel light appears. My avg MPG is about 15 mixed driving.Winters I get 240-250. I have 62k and I suspect I need a tune up.

I have a terrible misfire at the moment and no cash to fix it, I am getting 120 miles per tank (17 gallon). I don't drive anymore.

Yeah, I kinda just stopped driving my Pathfinder. I think I'm just gonna garage it for a while and get some jobs done on it.
