Well I finally got my red top back together (complete rebuild). Prior to rebuild, I had no weird noises/issues. When priming the oil pump I began to hear this loud metal to metal clunking. At first I thought it was timing, but came to find out the chain was hitting the upper guide (between cams). Now since this wasn't a problem prior the rebuild, could it need a new tensioner for some reason or is it because there is no real oil pressure yet and should wait until after startup?

did u use the hook on the tensioner when u put it in? and im runnin a fresh build sr 20 too. i opted not to use the upper guide. ive been told u dont need it. and when i timed it on the stand i reversed the turning with a ratchet and socket then it released the hook on the tensioner and it was fine. once it releases its a ok.

Yea...I compressed it, hooked it. Then I put it in and turned the crank back and forth a little to engage it (which I heard).
