Well... I bought my 2nd Q.

Sadly, Wes and the rest of the Q45 forum may have me divorced by the end of the year. Every day I read all the posts... every day my list of things to spend money on gets longer.

So, the story. I purchased a 1991 Q45a from a guy in Pittsburgh. Wes graciously drove up to my house so that I wouldn't have to make the road trip to Pitt all alone. So, I bribed him with mediocre food, a bad movie, and a worse bed. ANd, like the fool he is, he accepted.

It was a mere 7 hour road trip each way... with a rather stressful drive home without plates on the car.

Anyway... car is an exact duplicate of my current Q except for the silver color, and the operational active suspension. The price tag was well worth it for a nice early G50 with only 105K on the odometer.

My plan, at the moment, is the swap out the transmission and the accumulators from the new Q to my old Q. The rest of the vehicle will be parted out...so, check for a thread in the Infiniti Classifieds forum. With the exception of the engine, which is being saved as payment to a friend who has been most helpful, the rest of the car will be sold in pieces.

So... here are some pics.

Looking at the flippin' front seat, I don't know how you can even think of parting that car out ?!?!?!

I'd spend the $$ to have an Inf Tech inspect both, combine the best of both onto the celaner car (ext/int) and then sell the other as a running car. But that's just me :D.

Dude! Don't part that out! I'm going to be in Indiana next month. I'll take the car and do the guides and use it as a daily!

I completely agree. No reason to take yet another early G50 off the face of this earth unless you really have to, especially an active in good working condition. Combine the best of both however you like, and then sell the other car to someone on NICO.

Sounds like the consensus is to keep Q2 running...sadly, I was planning on some relatively immediate income from the part job in order to pay the loan I took to buy it.

Perhaps I will have to look at what it is going to cost me to do some swapping of parts between the two, and then sell the 2nd one whole.

transmission swap definately needs to be done at a shop. But, I think I might be able to do some of the active stuff on my own (meaning that I need to annoy Wes some more).

Chain guide job is going to be $1K if I can get it done on the cheap. And, that would probably leave a car with a great engine, great steering, good but not great transmission, and non operational active. Figure an active to standard conversion is another $1500 if you do a lot of your own labor. It would be a definate fixer for someone.

To be honest, though. I think it would be worth it. The engine only has 104K on it and runs smooth. Looks like the front cover had a tiny oil leak...but, that could easily be fixed during chain guide job. Paint is in good shape for the age (most of the G50's had great paint), just needs a good cleaning, clay bar, and wax to bring back the luster. Interior is dirty but in good shape. Couple hours with vacuum, carpet cleaner, leather cleaner, and some Lexol would have the interior looking nearly as good as my first Q.

Decisions, decisions.

Sorry... still searching for reasonable way to refer to them. Tried old Q and new Q... but, then everyone thinks I saying that one is literally older than the other, but they can't tell the difference.

Maybe I should name them. How about Lola and Layla?

Trust me, I understand... I was just messing with you.

The fun part starts when they trade places in your mind. I stuck with "Q1" and "Q2" for chronological reasons... bought the high mileage one first... so it was "Q1" - but when "Q2" became my primary car it was easy to mess things up. As soon as "Q1" finds a new home (in peices or as a whole to someone who wants to fix her) I guess I'll be done with the numbering anyway.

I almost used the last few digits of the VINs, but the wife thought that was too complicated... and it reminded her of her old job at Gulfstream Aerospace where they did that with planes.

So can you get a better pic of the driver's seat just in case you start to whore out parts?

I wish I needed parts. Its a nice looking Q! I could probably use the center console trim piece that goes around the radio, climate control, and shifter. Mine has some tiny holes/tears in it.

In my experiences, simple green beats any carpet cleaner out there. Just add water, scrub and run through a cycle in the washer, let it air dry.

Just part it out.

Seriously, people get all misty-eyed, but these are just old cars that aren't worth very much to most people (except us crazies!).

If you need the money (and it sounds like you do), just part it and don't look back. If it helps, think of all the other Qs you'll be saving by recycling your parts.

Oh, and I get dibs on the MC if it's the 17/16 one

It does seem like a shame to part out what looks like such a good condition Q, but I agree with Robert.

Man that interior really cleaned up nicely!!!!! Such a shame to see it go away if thats what you end up doing... That Q is SO clean and its so nice!!

I think you should sell the green one as is after we take the brakes and stereo crap out and then go with it with the grey one..... Youl end up spending less money in the long run, especially since we dont have to replace any injectors! The guides are the only bad thing, but maybe you could convince evan to do them once he moves to indiana!

Just remember parts arent going to be in large demand as we have had quite the douching of G50 parts on NICO in the last 3 months or so.

So road trip stories... Hmm, well we left at 630am tuesday, i told ross that i havent seen 6am in years except when i go visit the porcelin throne and return to peaceful slumber.. Unforatunately, we didnt take my Q out there, so we beat the piss out of a 2005 Grand Prix GTP... It has about 16,000 miles on it and it has only had 1 oil change.. Dont you just LOVE the GM oil life things? Makes no difference to me, the car goes away in 2 years (lease)...

The ohio/penn. turnpike is just crawling with cops, i can recall a few places that within 10 miles we'd see at least 4 people pulled over... NUTS... As ross elluded to earlier, i had to tailgate him as far home as possible (until he went into bladder relief fail safe mode) to prevent cops seeing him with no plates on...

The guy he bought it from was nice enough, he also had a decent 94 Q (black on black).. Unfortuantely, despite the great deal he was unable to fill the tank full enough with gas as he ran out of gas about 5 miles from his house..... That was a fun little adventure!

I got back home after meandering my way through the backroads of ohio and indiana, making a couple wrong turns but still making it in great time... Overall, i logged well over 950 miles (120 to get to GR, 440 to PA, 390 home) not including the 100 miles it took me to get to my grandparents house.. MY parents loved to tell people that I was going to Pittsburg via grand rapids... You are certain to get some funny looks!

Overall it was a great waste of a day, but I sure did miss my Q on that route...

I totally forgot to relate the empty gas tank story. Apparently, if you get low on fuel and go down a steep hill...your engine will shut off. Sadly, dude who sold me the car had just slightly more than a thimble full of fuel in the tank when I bought it. That was fun...not!

Anyway... after much discussion, I have decided to part the silver Q. It may not be the best way to go, or even the cheapest. But, given my current financial situation, it is the only way I can deal with things.

Wow... at least I had a 1/4 tank in mine when I sold her!

I hate to see you part her out, but you gotta do what you gotta do...

Could you swap the better condition interior/seats from the silver one? Or is your interior actually better?

The interior on my green Q is actually completely pristine with the exception of the drivers seat. And, I think I have a lead on a replacement drivers seat with good leather.

The interior of the green Q is in unbelievably good shape. Much, much better than the interior of the silver Q.
