Thinking about surrendering to a temp agency for dental staffing( I know, who would have known there was an agency for it? ). Anyone have any experience with temp agencies? I know that if I find a job within an allotted time, I have to buy my contract from them and it can be expensive, but think of all the experience I could be getting, and the money!

Please give input please.

Also, enjoy this video while you type a response.

I have had better luck with the temp agencies. It lead to a nine year gig that I left only because I moved out here to AZ. I would ask for full disclosure if you do decide to use one, that way you know what you are getting into ahead of time.

What you have to do EXACTLY if the company you are working through as a temp decides they want to employ you full time. Any and all fees? A certain length of time you have to work with them before you can leave them without penalty, things like that.

1) If a job is found and you are placed, you will have to pay the agency either directly or it will come out of your weekly/monthly salary

2) If you quit or are fired, you have to pay the temp agency a certain amount of money (typically a percentage of your salary)

Also, I did a little investigation and it appears as if most temporary work agencies share a database of job applicants (a.k.a. LEADS) and once someone is fired from a job that they were placed into, they become "blacklisted" on the database and loose many future job opportunities because of being blacklisted.
I'm typing from a phone, so I hope this is the bottom of your quote.

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't know about the blacklisting. So far I haven't been fired from a job before, but that's still a huge thing. I think I am gonna wait until I'm an RDA and can't find a job for some time before I sign up for one. I have until December/January to find a good paying job. If not, well I'm screwed.
Try Jobs.com, careerbuilder.com, etc. etc.
Only go to a temporary work agency if no other opportunities can be found.

Not all agencies are the same. The company I used didn't have any penalties whatsoever. Just don't assume that what is OK for one company will be the status quo for the whole industry.

Dammit! My response to Infiniti is inside that quote towards the end and mixed up in it. I would fix it, but I can't, I'm on a phone texting.

Don't put any job on your reference sheet that might be anything out of the ordinary.

Wages, generally how does it work for your employees?

Do the employers requesting the employees, have a given mandatory time? Say you have an employee that they decide to take, soes that employee stay there for a certain amount of time before they say no more?

Any benefits? Vacation, health, etc?

Does every agency have full disclosure?

How is the flow of work? Would I be able to claim unemployment between jobs?

Ok...first and foremost...if ANY agency wants a penny from you...turn around and walk out.

example:
Client calls and needs a CS person for 1 month
I ask them what kind of hourly bill rate I can charge.
They tell me $25/hr
I call you and offer you a CS job for 1 month and I will pay you $18.75/hr
I am not pocketing a full $6.25/hr from you. Approx. 25% of that $6.25 goes to payroll costs, your 4% vacation pay, Employment Insurance etc..then my own costs to run a business (rent, phone, computer etc) so in the end, I'm probably making like $2/hr off a candidate.
I try to pay my people as close to what the client would pay them if they were hired on their own.
I bill clients COMPLETELY seperate from the "Temp" I do not take a penny from you.
If I place you in a permanent job, I take nothing from you. I bill the client a percentage of whatever salary they hire you at.
Example -
Clients hires you at 40k for a CS job
I charge the client a "finders fee" for the candidate like 16% of the salary and give them a 90 day guarantee on the candidate. If they don't work out, I replace them free of charge.

They have just changed the rules here in Canucky land, so I can't 100% speak for all of your laws. But if you went on your states labour board (sorry labor for you yanks) they will be able to confirm if there is a mandatory hire time. Here, there isn't.

Some agencies offer benefits...but it is VERY rare. If you are on contract at a client, you MAY be eligible to receive benefits. Every company is different.
You are a temp. any vacation you take is unpaid. You only get paid for the hours you work. Unless it is a Stat holiday, here, I would have to take the last 4 weeks worked and divide by 20...that will be your pay for the holiday at a max. of 8 hours.

Depends on required work hours in your state to qualify for unemployment. Any temp hours worked are taken into consideration and added to the "pool" of hours.

Hope that helps!

Awesome! Thank you! One more question, I know that your country's health is a lot different than ours, but do you have temp workers that are dental assistants? I find it really awkward that there is a company that even exists. They're Busy Bee Dental Agency.

There is an agency out there that "specializes" in anything.

To my knowledge, there was an agency in the US called Elite Staffing that I believe focuses in Healthcare

Try these
