I've got this crazy idea of actually not venting my freon into the sky when I pull my KA out, but I really don't want to pay to have my unregistered S13 towed to the local garage to have the system purged. So...

I'm thinking of unbolting the A/C compressor from the engine and basically pushing/tying the whole thing, lines and all, out of the way while I pull the KA and drop in the CA. Is this a truly poor idea? Obviously its not the best solution, but is it at least feasible and moderately safe?

This may be better asked in the 240sx forum but I find the answers I get here are more concise (and more correct).

That is exatly what I've done with mine every time. Infact mine is Zip-Tied to the side of the engine bay right now, and has been like that for a month.

Just ditch it. Vent that $hit man.

Funny story about that: We were just starting my swap, and we decided to vent the freon to the atmosphere. We were doing this while in a garage, while standing around my engine bay. After about 5 minutes, we all look at each other and realize that this is a really bad idea. We were all feelin a little funny for about 30 minutes, and we finished the night with massive migraines. Oops :D

Lol yeah, i was tearing the motor out of a pathfinder the other day and i told everyone to get out of the grage caus this stuff will tear you up and after it vented for like 5 minutes some other friends came downstairs and walked right by it ignoring the screaming hissing sound and i told them to sit down before they passed out and they were feeling funny for a couple of minutes. Freon is dangerous stuff....

Thanks float, I'm going to go with the zip tie method then.

While I am being somewhat enviromental about this, my hope is really that I can take the car down to an A/C shop after the CA's in, have them vent the system, braze the lines from the KA pump onto the CA pump, and fill it right back up. Freon is damn expensive.

It's usually not a smart idea just to pump "old" refrigerant back into a system. It picks up alot of crap over time, and the oil breaks down(just like your engine oil).

They might cut you a deal if you let them reclaim your refrigerant, especially if its R12, since they do get money by selling that to a place that will process the impurities out and resell it.

BTW - I worked on residential and commercial A/C for a summer, and you don't want to know how many times refrigerant gets vented, even if you take all the steps to try to reclaim it. Heck, where do you think all that R22 goes when a 300 ton(i.e. provides the cooling capacity of 300 tons of ice melting in 1 hour, in other words - lots) V8 commercial compressor sucks in liquid refrigerant then blows out a hole in the side of the block?!?! I seem to recall just the charge for refrigerant on that badboy being somewhere upwards of $600-700(a buncha 25lb cannisters - we called 'em green weenies since they were green and vaguely sausage shaped :) ).

Ahhh - the A/C job, good times, good times...
