Although I have no reason to think my RB is running hot, I really wanted an aftermarket gauge to keep an eye on things. I live in Texas, so before I make this my daily driver (need to do some work on my RX7), I want to make sure my current fan and radiator setup is sufficient.

I purchased a autometer gauge with electric sendor. My idea was to replace the factor temp gauge sendor with the autometer one. I bought some metric adapters and nothing seems to fit the factory hole. I have now spent more money on adapters, (including BSPT/NPT), then I spent on the gauge.

Long story short I just can't find one that fits.

What are you guys doing for aftermarket temp guages/sendors?

Greddy makes an adapter for aftermarket temperature gauge, but it is suited for 1/8bspt fitting. You can buy an adapter or tap it to fit 1/8npt fitting. I tried using the adapter fitting on mine as well but it didnt fit, so I had to tap it. Works great so far.

i just went to home depot, got a bunch of brass water fittings, and tapped it inline in one of the heater hoses. works great with the autometer temp gauge.

i have the electric audometer water temp gauge on my car right now. i recommend make an adapter or buy one and put it in the middle section on your coolant return hose.

like this i made mine, but this place sells them .... click here

I have seen those, but they use the damn bspt. Thanks for the suggestions guys. I just really hate putting two extra connections in my coolant return lines, but that may end up being the route I go.

buy the greddy M12 -> 1/8" BSPT adapter from SPL and get a 1/8" bspt die. Just run the autometer sender through the die, the soft brass will easily rethread to 1/8 bspt. the adapter hole will also have to be enlarged a little with a drill press

if that's the case, just drill out and tap the port with the 1/8 thread size for the sensor.

i like to keep my oem water temp sensor for the gauge cluster, never know when i'll remove the autometer gauge. a new radiator hose isn't troublesome to replace if the time come.

Adapter Smapter... I did like foCk and ran it in between the radiator and where it connects to the upper part of the engine. I am running capillary sensor that is routed straight to my gauge. It was cheap and works great. All I did was take this lil hose connector thing that I got off the KA engine that housed the old temp sensor and it took a 1/8th fitting so I Jerry Rigged it up with some brass parts from Lowes. It works great and fits great. Just make sure you use some of that plumbers tape inbetween the brass fittings so it won't leak.~ANDREW~

So after looking at all the options I went a different direction. I took the original KA temp sendor and drilled the center out of it. I then cut the little notches that were holding the autometer temp sender guts in. I transfered the guts from the autometer sender into the KA temp housing, recrimpted it and it works.

Car runs right about 170 degrees once it is warmed up.

i found one WATER TEMP gauge it's digital from CSR can find it on JEGS and it has a controller on it so you can set what temp you want your fans to activate. It's $99 and i plan on runnin a $100 14" perma cool fan as a pusher 3300cfm it's reversible, for the time being. Now i know it has a 1/8 npt fitting sender so do i need to tap and drill or can i get a brass fitting that will fit into the KA GAUGE sensor? I read what you guys did but everything you guys said about npt and bspt or whatever is greek to me. here's the link to the gauge.

So basically Nissan uses BSPT for there pipe threading which is different from NPT (american cars). So if you get a US made gauge, chances are it will be NPT, which will not fit. You can get an adapter to go from NPT to BSPT, however I bought every one I could find and could not find one that would fit the sender unit.

Greddy sells an enline one that uses BSPT, so that doesn't do you all that much good either, but it makes me believe that if you bought one of there guages, you would probably get a BSPT sender, which means you could just put it in the stock location. Had I not figured out a way to gut the Autometer unit then I would have tried the Greddy gauge.

will a normal tap and die set work for this lil operation. I have found plenty of tap and die sets less than $20. and when you did tap it what size did you use?

You could just drill a new hole and tap it for the new sensor. My concern was that if I managed to crack it of it some way screw it up, I would have to hunt down a replacement neck.

I would use a Heli-coil to do this. Just take what you need threaded to a 1/8 NPT to a GOOD auto shop and tell them that you need this hole/thread made into a 1/8 NPT with using a Heli-coil....Done....

I had seen those also. My issue was that I did not want to splice my the coolant lines. It gives two more possible failure points in the cooling system. Like I said it just didn't work for me, but everyone has choices.
