Hey guys! This is my first post. First of all, I just bought an 86 720 4x4. Thing runs like a top but obviously will need some tlc. My question is has anyone had experience with a bad temp gauge? Mine stays below cold. I will check to see if it is disconnected at the sensor today as this will be the first chance I get at checking it. Just thought I would post this now to give time for responses. I will have other questions later as there are a number of small things I would like to repair.

thanks,

Keith

This might be another one of those Quirks.

I have an '86 720 and the temp gauge hardly gets above the cold line at the bottom.

My gauge usually hangs out about here, and I know it works cause once I lost my fan belt and bang-zoom, way hot.

Mine gets to just below half when fully warmed. Unless I'm going 110 km/h (60mph) in a -40 day then it dips to 1/8 lol.

dangit!! Hey, does anyone know where the temperature sender is? I think I can figure this out if I know how it is wired. And ofcourse, my gas gauge is not working either!

I have a theory that these trucks, under normal operation, especially the napz, run fairly cool. I installed an aftermarket manual temp gauge, I can only get the temp to go up when in 4wd for a long time when my clutch fan on the water pump worked. I know the gauge is accurate, since it manual, meaning no electric sending unit.

Mine works great. It's usually about 1/4 but goes through the whole range as I had a leaking radiator.

Started it up the other day and both the temp gauge and the fuel gauge began working. Been working ever since!

I think the problem may be with grounding...

On all vehicles grounding is a real problem. We need to check this aspect of the vehicles more often.

sounds like you have a few gauge issues overall man... but everything that has been said about these trucks running cool is true

with all the stuff i have removed from the bay, and the extra cooling i have added.... i will NEVER get close to half way on my temp gauge unless i lose the belt

Thanks, man!

By the way, when the gauge decides to work, it runs just where I think it ought to-- right inbetween cold and middle (a quarter of the way up). So I am not worried about the temp, just would like to be able to monitor it!
