i just check out this 95 240sx that i'm gonna buy.it's in good condition, except for the temperature gauge.the needle doesn't more anywhere.it would jump to about 3/8 when the gas pedal is pressed, and fall right down. does anyone have the same problem?any help would be appreciate.

thanks

i cant speak for everybody, but ive had all kinds of weirdo temp gauge problems.

okay, you owe me one cause i just looked this up. its page 45 of the electrical section of the FSM. It says basically:Get an ohmeter and put the positive side on the thermal transmitter, and put the negative on the intake manifold itself.

with the water at 140 degrees F (which i can only imagine is when the needle is in the middle but who knows) the resistance should be "Approx. 70-90ohms"

With the water at 212 degrees F(boiling) that resistance is "Approx. 21-24ohms"

The obvious thing you wondered two paragraphs ago was, where the hell is the thermal transmitter? If you follow the upper radiator hose back to the engine its attached to the intake manifold. If you look on the front of that intake manifold there are two sensors, one is larger, red and attached with a clip. There is a sensor to the right of this and it is small and black, this is what your are looking for. pull off the black plug and its just a metal spade.

This might be why its acting funky, but i'm definately not certain.

this is going to be completely random, but when my temp gauge started doing that a few days later the battery died while i was trying to drive it. some how the smaller ground on the alternator had fallen off and the car wouldn't charge.

so it could be a crazy wiring problem, or the battery could be low? i dunno, more food for thought but good luck to ya
