Hi Guys,

The temp gauge is sticking to C and the idle is up after crusing at 60 in 28o weather. At stop lights the guaue goes up (somewhat) and the idle goes down.

Sounds like a thomostat...what do you guys think? Also the check engine light is on.

????

Thanks for the advice,

Peter

Check the codes. Thermostat probably history, but check belts and idlers also.

Tip for the day:

° = ALT + 0176 (in sequence with ALT key held down).

Brian you should © (Alt+0169) that....

When you open the hood, does the engine feel as warm as it should? Even if the Tstat is fully open, the coolant temp gauge should move even if its just a little.

It's all in Character Map. Search for it in Windows.

no to number 1, the coolant gauge moves just a little. Where is the thomostat located? Is it a five minute job (like it should be?)

Assuming this is for a Q45 (VH45DE), (Vehicle is unspecified in profile).

The thermostat.

Again, assuming that this is a Q45 (VH45DE).

Nice pics anslasak. I'm about to change the stat' myself too along with belts and fan. Got one from Joe sitting in the trunk. I can't help but wonder why infiniti didn't create a gasket instead of relying on RTV. Same goes for the valve covers. Why?

Anyway...when you guys apply RTV to the surfaces, do you assemble right away and torque fully or do you wait a while before fully tightening?

I really needed to do this job this weekend but I'm on call and my blackberry is vibrating more than a XXX shop "toy" section. You should see the cracks in my fan. And I already have a brand new radiator so everything to lose.

I usually wait 1 minute, install snuggly, wait 1 minute, tighten to spec.

(Keep in mind that valve covers have to be installed within 5 minutes of installing the half moons in the heads.)

The FSM says to drain coolant from the radiator as wells as the drain cocks located on both sides of the cylinder block before installing thermostat.

Didn't know about those extra drain points. Guess I'll fill up with some nice distilled water and good old green coolant. I hope my fan makes it till next week.

Thmostat installed this morning. I did not drain the coolant.

1) clean off old RTV with a blade.2) apply thin line of blue silicone around back face of stat. Let set several minutes then put in place and hold it in the center by wedging it till it sets and stays.3) apply thin line of blue silicone to cover and bolt in. Snug evenly then let set for several minutes then tighten.4) did I mention...skin your knuckles and curse loudly putting in lower bolt.

runs fine-works fine, thanks to Pep Boys open on Sunday and their cheapo stat

yessss ssss ssss ssss Wes ss

Nick the old timer, G50 tech will get it soon and see to the vib...funny the more I drive it the more I think it is the motor mounts afterall. I told my reg tech to intall'em if they were bad when he was doing the transmission mount....he said they were good but but how is he really to know if they are bad???? The transmission mount was toast so why not the motor mounts too!

You might tell your tech that the motor mounts can be done in not that much time... You dont have to remove the cross member, apparently.. just unbolt the motor mounts from the cross member and then lift hte engine up and you can weasel em in.

Just to add something here... in my experience the hose between the t-stat housing and the "sacrifical annode" pipe tends to be hard to remove. I would order a new hose with the t-stat.
