I am going to change stuck closed thermostat for the first time tonight. I'm studying the FSM but would like to know if there are other things I have to know and to avoid.

I already got myself new so-called fail safe thermostat made in Israel and new thermostat gasket and silicon sealant (instead of silicon gasket maker)

Would like to share your experiences so please toss me your 5 cents. Appreciate a lot!

use the nissan rtv rather than the stuff at kragens or autozone. don't apply too much rtv either, apply just enough, too much and it can gunk up your thermo. keep in mind the direction your thermo's pointing as well.

Juusai, Thank you very much for your advice. Had no problem getting the bottom bolt.

But when I put the old thermostat in to water and boiled it, I was surprised to see its valve opening.

The bottom hose was certainly cold and top hose was hot as usual when I ran the engine before.

I have to tell you that the lower coolant hose and water inlet had rusts on them while coolant I drained had its original color. This does mean that coolant didn't circulate past the thermostat.

I am now really confused...

Xagna - Can you tell me how what parts need to be removed to get to the thermostat housing.
