if you're trans fluid is at the proper level and clean, the smoke is probably not from the transmission. the kicking is most likely the accumulator for 1-2 has a broken spring or some other valve body issue.the smoke maybe from a leaking heater core, is the coolant level dropping?if it is, turn the heater on with the car running and check for dampness in the carpet by the drivers right foot area and passengers left foot area.

is there coolant anywhere inside the car? if so, it's probably the heater core that's leaking.maybe when the coolant is flowing through the core it doesn't leak but when it's closed off, the coolant pressure is higher and causes it to leak, i don't know.do you have any holes in the firewall or floor board area? maybe oil is leaking onto the exhaust and causing smoke to enter the passenger compartment.i'm just guessing that it's coolant because you said that the smoke smells like coolant.

When you turn the air on, you're not getting dizzy or any type of high, right? You don't want to wind up having a freon leak...

looks like your heater core's gone busted. Time to replace it, not much else you can really do about it.

bypassing the heater core?

ok u will see 2 heater hoses going to the firewall...

u will unclamp them then use a union joint to loop it back to each other...

then give a finger-salute to your heater core

PICS!

ok, i forgot if the hose was 5/8" or 3/4"

PS: try to get a metal one ( i know that pepboys used to stock them behind the counter w/ the other hoses n shizz, but that was a loooong time ago ~ year 2000)

PPS: u may want to burp your cooling system so you won't overheat yo' engine, yo!

PPPS: how's the condition of your trans fluid... is it burnt? time to change it... my commonsense tingling says if the cooling system is overheating d/t that core leak/air bubbles... well the trans fluid is also cooled by part o' the radiator <u see those lines from transmission to radiator?>
