"It had the potential of going badly," said Superintendent Gene Modernize. "With this student, at this school, on this particular day, we were successful. We got lucky."

Parents and school officials in this tiny town north of Lincoln said Magee often spoke about Columbine, where Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 students and a teacher before killing themselves.

"He asked them in class last week if they knew who Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were," said Julia Lostrah, whose daughter is Magee's classmate. "Then he said, `I know them."'

Second school incident within a weekThe arrest came in the same week that authorities in another rural town in the heartland avoided a potentially violent school encounter.

Two second-grade boys and an 11-year-old schoolmate were arrested Wednesday in Forsyth, Montana, on charges that they buried a loaded handgun in a playground sandbox and plotted to shoot and stab a third-grade girl during recess. Authorities said the boys intended to harm the young girl because she had teased two of them.

No one answered the door Thursday at Magee's red-brick home just down the road from the school in Malcolm, a town so small that its downtown streets are unpaved.

School and law enforcement officials said his mother works as a chef in Lincoln, and his father is serving in Afghanistan in the military.

Magee, who has attended Malcolm schools since kindergarten, was always been on the district's radar, Neddenriep said.

"All the way through, he was just a little different," he said. "He liked to be alone, he didn't take part in many things. His enjoyment was weapons."

The superintendent said he wasn't aware of reports that Magee was a target of bullies. "There were never any incidents reported," he said.

When students began reporting to faculty that Magee bragged of making and testing explosives at home, Neddenriep said, the school paid close attention to the teen.

Magee then began showing some interest in school activities, he said.

Lostrah, who is also the school district's administrative assistant, said Magee joined the cross-country team and was an impressive musician.

"He was very talented," she said.

Magee was being held in a juvenile jail, but he was charged as an adult with attempted first-degree murder.

Neddenriep said the school of about 450 students will refine its safety policies in the wake of Magee's arrest.

something sort of like that happened at my junior high school, except there were like 3 of them, and they never actually brought the weapons to the school, they had dug a tunnel in the woods and at the end of which they stored stolen weapons from hunting rifles and shotguns to compound bows.

3 weeks ago a cop entered the class I was currently in, and told everyone to get out of the school right away. The entire school had to be evacuated... I still don't know why, they never told us anything...

That kind of thing happens alot at my school, 3-4 times a year. I don't go to a bad school. In fact its rated one of the best public schools in Louisiana...

WTF!? 2 second grade boys and an 11 yr old? All i could think about back then was mustangs and power rangers. What could possess children like that to even think about killing someone? About twice every year here, our school has to be evacuated because of a bomb threat.

White people in general are more intelligent, not because they are white, but because of the difference in cultures. They use that to plot revenge against people that make their lives a living hell. In just about every case, the cause is from teasing and bullying. Again, thats something else I noticed that happens alot in the "white" culture...

bomb threat. we used to get them from time to time but nothing ever came of them. was probably someone trying to get out of a test or something.

and being a white person myself, i know first hand how crazy we can be;) . you mouth off to a black dude he'll beat your ***, but that'll be the end of it. you mouth off to a little scrawny white kid and he'll spend years plotting to hurt you. by the time they get around to doing something about it you've long since forgotten about it all. at my highschool it would have been SOOOO easy for someone to just walk in and start shooting people. we would have been screwed. we had no locked doors, only one police officer (actually a constable lol) its just scary to think about. plus it was a small hick town/school and every one had guns

It's all sad but true. Our future generations are becoming whimps, they can't even handle getting picked on. It sickens me, I was picked on growing up but then I learned to fight and started to work out and now i can handle my own with out the need to take it further then it needs to go. "bombs" are easy to make. real explosives are a bit different, theres a science to planting and designing them to create max damage and casualties.

goddamnit, these kids need to learn how to USE their hands before the learn how to WORK with them...boy needs his ears boxed and swift kick in the taint with cowboy boots...oh, and jailtime, in a federal pound me and not juvie.
