Hi folks,

I'm wondering approximately how many km I can do with my tire, the tread is now 5/32.

Based on the Continental web site, at 4/32, I will need to change my tire. Is it true or it is safe to keep it a little bit longer?

Thanks in advance.

I usually go by the wear bars on the tires or when it start feeling squiggly when the roads are wet.

The only wear bar I have on this tire is the one for the 2/32.

I went to a garage and they told me that from 5/32, I will not do more than 5-10k km before getting 2/32. Is it possible?

Depends on your driving style for the most part. I would trust what Continental says first and then go by "feel". If the tire is at 4/32 and it still has plenty of wet traction then I would not change it. If you are not sure then change them when you feel uncomfortable.

koolyce,

I tossed my Conti's at around 5/32's of wear. I would be careful, at that tread depth the risk of hydroplaning on rain soaked roads is high. I found wet traction is NOT one of these tire's strong suits.

For winter use, these tires will be all but useless at that depth. If you don't replace them this summer, plan on swapping them before the snow flies! (Assuming there is snow where you live).

Thanks. I live in Quebec, so the winter tire are mandatory, I already have the best Winter tire Nokian :chuckle:

I call at different place this morning and the best choice I think for the moment is the new Michelin Defender. After march 25th, there is a rebate of 100$. This tire is new and replace the Hydroedge and Harmony, which both have pretty good review. The price with installation is 797$ tx in with the rebate.

My other options are Kumho KL21 or Pirelli P4, but to save 100$, I think I do a better choice with Michelin.

The Kumho's are nice tires. I had the older Solus KH16 on the wife's car, they were pretty decent, quiet running and long wearing.

Another tire to consider is the Yokohama Avid ENVigor. They also have a $50 cash back offer. I had the Avid TRZ's and was quite happy with them.

Bottom line: almost anything is better than the OEM Conti's!

I live in a cold weather state so if it was me I would run them up until October and get new tires for the winter.

careful with that. the less meat = the more chances for hydroplaning.

you have to take into account the season you are in and will be entering when deciding what to do with tires nearing the completion of their service life.
if your entering a dry, hot season then you can drive till the wear bars. if your entering a cold, wet, snowy, or rainy season = i would take that into account and maybe change the tires.
(one thing i learned while racing at 160mph on the racetrack on a bike is "TIRES ARE CHEAPER THAN AN ACCIDENT. DONT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT RISKING LIFE & LIMB OVER A COUPLE HUNDRED BUCKS, BECAUSE THE DAMAGE COULD COST THOUSANDS IF NOT A LIFE.")
