So for all of you who are clearly more tech savy than I am, here's the deal:

Several years ago I purchased a domain to use for business. I'm a Realtor, and all I did was redirect my web site to my agent page at the company I work with...

At some point around 2008 I set things up so that email sent to my domain would go to Outlook Express. I set it up to use AOL's mail servers for this. Then I continued to use my old email address and never gave out that domain-based email address or opened Outlook Express again.

For whatever reason, I recently decided to try to set things up to use Outlook.com for my email with my domain name. I made all of the MX entries and so forth at godaddy, and at this point I can send outgoing email from Outlook.com, or by logging in on AOL's site, but I can only receive mail through the webmail application at AOL. I'm sure there's some setting I'm overlooking, but I sure can't figure it out.

So my question is this... what do I need to do to get email sent to my domain - hosted at godaddy.com - to go to my Outlook.com inbox instead of to the AOL webmail inbox?

Thanks!

Heath

Have you tried contacting Godaddy or Amateurs On Line?

I assume it's kind of in limbo between AOL and GoDaddy, although I've done everything outlook.com said to do to make the change. I don't think AOL even does this type of hosting for non AOL Accounts now, but I may be wrong on that.

I called Godaddy and they said that from what he can tell, everything looked reasonable in terms of the DNS settings I had entered - but that since I didn't actually purchase email hosting from them there wasn't much he could do.

I'm no help... I hate Outlook, and use Gmail for everything (which is super-easy to set up, btw).

First are you using Outlook.com or just the program Outlook?

If you are using Outlook.com you will need to point your MX records to what Outlook.com gave you.

So look at this guide, http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains ... ook-email/

Then the MX records you are assigned from Outlook.com you will input at GoDaddy.com under the Advanced - DNS settings.
ONce you enter those it could take up to 48 hours to propagate throughout the internet, however it usually only takes a few hours. So if someone can send you email from say AOL after 5 hours, but someone from Gmail cannot, it's because you have to wait.

It's outlook.com

I did the MX records over 24 hours ago.

Anyhow, I think you're on to something. When I send a test mail from my gmail account - it goes to Outlook - like I want. From AOL, it still goes to AOL. The messages I try to send from a Yahoo account bounce back as undeliverable with an Error code 475: Suspicious activity was detected on your account. Not sure what that's about...

So I guess I'll wait. I've always thought of those "48 hours to take effect" warnings as overkill, but maybe not in this case.

I had only used my AOL email to tend test messages before - so I really appreciate the suggestion to try a different account!

Hi, thank you for asking your question on JustAnswer.

Actually, hundreds of Yahoo Mail users are having this exact problem. All at the same time. Yahoo is not offering any explanations. If hundreds of users have the same problem, it becomes a Yahoo problem. There is a strong chance that there is no "suspicious activity". It's just another problem caused by Yahoo's recent upgrades to the site. You have to wait a few hours or days until Yahoo fixes it. No one has figured out a workaround. It's almost a sure bet it's them and not you...
Whoever is answering their twitter account is getting buried with the same problem:

http://twitter.com/#!/yahoomail

If it doesn't clear up in a few hours, you can try this:

Usually yahoo issues this message when your e-mail account may have been hijacked and used for spamming. To find the spamming source and to make sure that it isn't you causing this, Yahoo has to temporarily shut down your mail account. During the suspension, you have access to all email in your inbox, personal folders and sent folder, and to your mail options. You will not be able to send or receive mail or save any drafts. Email sent to your account will bounce back to the sender.

Probable causes

1: Somebody may have tried to enter your account without being authorized, and he may have tried to do so a couple of times. After a couple of failed attempts to open your mail account, Yahoo also temporarily shuts it down for security measures. In some cases a user may not even try to get into your account, but he may want to cause trouble for you - he just knows that after a couple of seemingly unauthorized attempts to enter your account, Yahoo shuts it down for a couple of days. Often an automated program is used for this which can send more than 1000 requests a minute. The Yahoo servers detect that a human can't be behind such attempts and presto, the account is shut down.

What you can do is go to: http://login.yahoo.com/config/login . After your first try you may get a failure message, but when you try again, you'll see a captcha link. Only real life people could handle this correctly, spambots can't read it. If you are lucky, you may be able to enter your account at this point.

2: If you send large amounts of mail, even if it is for non-profit organizations, Yahoo may close your account temporarely because their program can't tell the difference between a supposed spammer and a real one.

Summary: if the login hack doesn't work, wait a little, a suspension usually lasts about 48 hrs. If you then still can't get in, go to this online help form and describe your problem:
http://help.yahoo.com/fast/help/us/mail/cgi_ymail
You could also send a mail to e-mail support:

or call Yahoo! Customer Service: 1.866.562.7219, 1.408-349-3301, 1.866.492.4664 , 1.408.349.3300,1.408.349.1572 or 1.866.850.4303.

You can you also Tweet them, or click the following link to chat with them >> yahoo chat support the chat option is just below the yellow box, in the mean time, you may be able to send email messages at:

What's the email address? I think I have some tools leftover from when I did this sort of thing that might help if it doesn't work again tomorrow...

I work at 2PM EST, so I might be able to help before then. :gotme

Update. Everything seems to be coming through to the Outlook.com inbox except for messages sent from an AOL address. Messages from AOL Accounts still go to the AOL inbox. I've had a couple that won't go, but one is from my Yahoo account where everything bounces back as undeliverable due to "suspicious activity from this account" like I mentioned earlier, and another one from a buddy's work account. So I'm at least making progress I guess.

I have a thread going in an AOL support forum, but we haven't gotten far yet.

What do you mean by that? Messages sent to your AOL email address still go to your AOL email address??? Of course they would.

Do you have multiple email addresses and they were being forwarded to another email address? If that is the case you need to go into those accounts and change the forwarding to your new email address.

Also, make sure in your Godaddy settings that the only MX records listed are the ones Outlook.com told you to use. Any old ones should be deleted.

Let me try to be more clear. Prior to last weekend when I started messing with this stuff - if you sent an email to [email protected] I would go to aol.com, log in with the user name "[email protected]" and a password and check it. Then, over the weekend, I decided to move the email hosting to Outlook.com. I changed all of the settings (MX etc.) in the cpanel at Godaddy. Now if you send me an email, and your address is an AOL address, I can only check it if I go to AOL and log in to their webmail. If you're using any other email provider (gmail, yahoo, Hotmail, outlook, something from work) I see it in my inbox at Outlook.com and not at the one at AOL.com. So for whatever reason email from AOL users is getting misdirected based on my old settings instead of going to my Outlook.com inbox based on my current settings.

There's no forwarding going on. And there is only one MX record - which is the one that Outlook told me to enter... the others have been deleted.

Thanks!

Heath

You seriously must have some sort of forwarding rule set up in your cpanel settings then. Are you all that familiar with cpanel's advanced settings?

Q451990, did you sign up years ago for the AOL "My eAddress" email? That looks like it was a product AOL had where you could sign up for and use your own domain email address through AOL.
I have a feeling this is what you did and AOL still has some settings setup somewhere for you personal domain name. I have never heard of that My eAddress until right now and I don't think many other people have either :chuckle:
Sounds like you need to completely disable this AOL My eAddress. Go into AOL's settings and delete your personal domain. AOL still has their MX records setup for your My eAddress.

Dattebayo - I'm not that familiar with the advanced cpanel settings - but I'll go look again.

Good theory darylzero - but thankfully, no, it wasn't a My eAddress account. I purchased it through Yahoo initially, and then moved it to Godaddy. I wouldn't rule out AOL treating as one by "mistake" but it has always been my personally owned domain.

Thanks guys!

It's looking like AOL is treating as a My eAddress domain, even though it's not.

I found this in a mail settings menu:

It's finally all working correctly. I sent a help request to the "AOL Postmaster" and things magically starting working right... I can now receive email from anyone - AOL or otherwise. I'm not sure if the help request did it, or it just took a couple of weeks for AOL's servers to recognize the change, but it's all good now.

Thanks again for everyone's advice!

Heath
