I just got me a 91-Q45 160k, for a thousand bucks it’s an awesome ride! Then I found out here that it wasn’t using 1st gear so I went manual now I just leave the pack in the dust! I see what the tac is for now!

It’s got a few problems I need some Tech help with…(Two are urgent)?

1. The engine just quits randomly sometimes while driving but mostly at idle just after starting and it appears to be getting worse very quickly. Q, What will cause this?

2. The brake lights are not coming on and the bulbs, fuses and the third light are good. Q, Were do I start to look for the problem?

The 90-92Qs came with 2nd gear start from the factory.

1. Check the electrical connections at your mass air flow (MAF) meter. Also check the CAS (Crank angle sensor) and check for fuel pressure. If you hear a loud humming from the back seat area - it's your fuel pump dying - replace it ASAP. A bad fuel pump can kill the FPCU (Fuel Pump Control Unit) which costs $300+ new.

2. Brake swich could be bad. Will the car shift in to "D" from "P" without pressing the shift lock button beside the shifter? If so, skip the brake switch and look for shorts in the brake lamp sockets caused by non OEM bulbs overheating the sockets. The socket assemblies are about $10-20 from any of our sponsors. Another possibility is the lamp sensor... Are you sure all of the fuses are good?

Brew up a big pot of coffee and use the search feature - most everything about these cars has been discussed at some point. Some good search topics are:

"Timing Chain Guide""Transmission Cooler""Fuel Pump""Fuel Pump Controller""MAF""Transmission Cooler""Transmission Flush""TCU" or "Transmission Contoller"

Pay particular attention to anything posted by Q45Tech

Good luck and welcome to NICO!

I appreciate the instant response.I have been browsing the site for a wile and I have found so much to look at! Well I just got the car and I just found the site and I live in an apartment building so I cant work on the car much.So It will take some time to some all this up. I just hope I have time enough before the car doesn’t run at all.

To answer some of your questions:The car will shift in to "D" from "P" without pressing the shift lock button. All of the fuses are good. There is know signs of overheating in the sockets, it all looks new?Q451990 wrote: Another possibility is the lamp sensor... I’ll check the lamp sensor. If I know where to look for it?

Thanks again!!!
