Im in the process of tearing down my engine for a rebuild. I however ran into a small problem w/the crankshaft sproket. Im wondering how the hell you get the thing off so I can take out the crankshaft. I looked in the FSM but could not find the directions for it. If someone could give me an answer it would be great.

Also,my crankshaft is pretty much in the crapper and has to be replaced due very bad scoring from the shot bearings. Does anyone have an extra one that they want to part with?? If not, does the CA18de work w/the DET??

that timming cog is a b itch. most guys drill holes, tap threads in them and then use 2 bolts to walk the damn thing off....the one from the ca18de is the same, so u could just cut it off.

i havnt even gotten my damn crank pulley off yet, so atleast ur 1 step ahead of me

cut a big groove in it, smash it with a hammer/chisel and be done with it.

Sounds fun and destructive. Yea, I guess I'll do that and just buy another one. So does the CA18de crankshaft work aswell, because I'll be needing one of those definatly.

word on that.. i've tried everything.. my last resort is going to be heating it up with a torch then letting it cool down so it might break free..

you MAY get lucky with heat, but as most have found, its siezed on and will need cutting.

what happened to your crankshaft that makes you think you need a new one?

i tried a bunch of different things w/ heat and cutting but i found the best method was drilling and tapping two holes in the front face of the cog 180* apart. then using the right size bolts and a slide hammer pulled it right off. very safe as well.

I was there at this same damn crank sprocket a while ago and i agree with this man! Deffinately try this method as i and others will agree it is an easier and safer method! I put anti-sieze lube on my new sprocket to help prevent this during the time i own the engine.

I didn't feel like drilling and tapping it so I used a Dremel with a reinforced cut-off wheel to cut a notch in it. Then I stuck a screwdriver in the notch and worked it around until it cracked and I could slide it off.

There's several cuts on the gear because I changed my mind on where to cut it--ended up doing it over the key on the crank. It wasn't a big deal, just took a little time. There's nothing dangerous about it if you're wearing safety glasses and gloves.

IIRC the new gears are $23.05 from http://www.onlyfactoryparts.com.

Well when the rod bearings went out, I guess some pieces of metal from them shot into the main bearings and they some how seized up against the crankshaft, leaving deep grooves in the crankshaft. Pretty bad.

Well, I finally got a new crankshaft. However, I need a new timing sprocket aswell, seeing asthough when I took the old one off I had to drill holes in it and back it out with bolts, thus rendering it useless. Long story short, I went to Autozone (where I ordered my crank from) and asked if they had the timing sproket and it turns out that they dont. My question is, where do you guys think I could get one??Thanks for the help.

DOH! Yea, sorry guys, I must have overlooked it. I'll get right on that. Hopefully I can start putting the motor back together after I get done with this internship. Got all the parts this week (CP pistons, new bearings, All OEM gaskets, oil pump, water pump, belts, new crank), plus I'm getting all the machine work done around mid July. Wish me luck.

Sounds like a nice parts list you've got there! Mine's in the machine shop right now.
