I've been thinking about my next project alot lately i guess to vent from my current one. i will putting together a turbo kit this time and the only thing that i'm unsure about it the fittings for the oil lines. looking around i found AN fitting that are sized like -3 to -12. just wondering how these sizes relate to each other and regular measurements (standard, meteric). i will be running an sr t25 at first for a while, then most likely upgrade to something a little bigger.

Here is something I had. Not alot but it does describes the principle behind it.

The AN (Army-Navy) standard was established many years ago by the U.S. military to set a common measurement for hose and fittings. It designates the outside diameter (O.D.) of the ridged metal tube that is compatible with each size of fitting. Still today, this AN dash standard is the benchmark measurement for military, industrial and performance hose applications. These dash sizes are expressed as the numerator of the fraction, with the denominator always being 16. For example, a -04 port is 4/16 or 1/4-inch.

structure,I got a painful lesson (less than a quart of oil left in engine) from using the bronze line found in hardware store. It gave out after few months of use due to engine movement (is like you bending a pipe right and left.. it break)

So, I decided to upgrade to industrialize hardcore material - steel braided hose. My machanical DSM friend recommend:

Russell Pro Flex Hose -04 6 feet (799-632010)http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/nc...r=361$25.99

Swivel Hose End Fittings -4AN hose end (for your end of hose) (555-100101)http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/nc...r=361You need 2. $7.69 each

Flare Adapter Fittings -1/8" NPT to -4AN Flare (your turbo to your hose) ( 555-100000 )http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/nc...r=361You need 2. $2.99 each

Total $56.34 including shipping.

Now, to make sure it fit, you can just run to hardware store, get a 1-inch 1/8 NPT fitting (look for pipe area, is like $0.49) and try to screw into the hole where you screw your oil pressure sensor. If the thread match, bingo ! just purchase to above stuff. Remember to buy a T-fitting too , so you split your oil for you pressure sensor and your turbo.

example of 1/8 extension.

Grassroots Motorsports had a good article on AN fittings a few months back...not that this helps you right now.

A quick Google of "AN fittings" came up with some interesting stuff.

I think this is particularly cool, for instance.

Oh yeah, when you screw the AN, remember you don't have to use a big force. With their unique 45' degree angle design, a tool-tight ( maybe 5 ft/lb ? ) is enough for the fitting, up to 100+psi.

I think 4 , in -4AN, means the inner hole diamater of the fittings.

AN fittings are the devil, the aluminum is extremely soft and easy to scratch up (I just stopped caring and started using the good ol' vise grips...hey it looks like **** but it will NEVER come undone :)) If you can, get as many steel fittings as possible, that aluminum crap just sucks. Oh, and they are ridiculously overpriced for what they are and very hard to work with in smaller sizes.
