Im installing the timing belt but how do you set piston 1 to TDC? Do you just align the marks on the sprockets to the marks behind them? I read that you put a screwdriver in the #1 cylinder and crank it until it's at the top. Also, I turn the crank seperately from cams when I put my clutch on...is it ok to do that?

Do you have the fsm? If you do, it shows how to set the timing.

It's not okay to turn your crank seperately from the cams. You run a risk of jamming the valves into the pistons. As for setting your timing, this section is covered extensively on this forum. But as a quick reference, the cam gears has timing marks on them and they must be aligned with the marks on the black cover behind the cam gears with white marks on it. Temporarily install the crank pulley, make sure that the cam marks are in the vicinity of where I told you they should be, rotate the crank until the orange mark or the 2nd mark from your left if you're facing the pulley is line-up with the pointer with the white line on it which is on the lower timing cover. If you do this correctly, you should be fine and so should your timing.

thanks for helping out Dee even though it's probably in the achieve already. Oh damn it....I turned the crankshaft when I installed the clutch and the crank pulley..sigh...im so stupid. What to do now...take out the heads and see any obvious damage or pretty much too late?

you may as well connect the timing belt and do a compression check..if no go..you can call yourself a dip**** as much as you like. If it's ok, you can say 'wheew that was close..' and get over it.

there are also timing marks on the gear behind the crank pulley. i always just use those. i wouldnt worry about the valvetrain, just make sure you dont do it again. it doesnt matter about the compression or exhaust stroke, as you set it when you put the car at tdc. its not really possible to have it 180 degrees out.
