Wondering where the location of the TCU is in the '91 Q45. I'm looking to swap mine out with a '93. Does the '93 have it in same location or different? Also doing synthetic oil change. My shop has Kendall and BMW synthetic at much lower cost than Mobil 1. Am I ok with either of those?

Much appreciation

BTW, I've done some searches on the two, could not find exactly what I wanted in a short time. I can only really search the site when i am at work. My connection speed at home is too slow

Thanks again

It's on the driver's side. Where your left leg would be while driving.

kendall synthetic isnt bad at all, the best weighht of it is the 5w-40 which meets some real tough VAG and MB specs.

The TCU kick panel has a bolt that holds it down, fwiw. Look towards the front of the car at the base of the panel on the drivers side left footwell for a little carpet flap that will expose the 10mm bolt.

A '93 Q45 with a build date of 7/03 should have the 1st start TCU, correct? I haven't heard about the part # yet. Just getting anxious. The guy is parting out a '93 Q45, many parts remaining

All 1993 and later Q45 have the first gear start.

That is a <very> late build date for a 93.Almost certainly last month of 93 production.

I generally consider anything later than early summer 93 a very late 93.

I'd like to sell them as a set if possible. Many members have noticed some weirdness at the rev limiter with a mis-matched combination, and I noticed some differences in idle quality after switching from a mis-matched set to the matched set, but nothing major. I don't run it up to redline that often, so the rev limiter wasn't something that I ever really got a feel for.

These came out of a 93Q with no options (like TCS or A) and I'm running a set like this in my "Q2" with great results.

One thing I will mention - I bought these at a salvage yard last fall and never got around to testing them, so I'll want to drive them around for a week or so before I'd feel comfortable shipping them out.

Hey guys, the part number they are giving me is 31036-68u10 for the TCU, is this correct, could it be the ECU? Also, Q451990 as you suggested above, you would suggest getting both the ECU and TCU from this car? Mine is HICAS w/out traction control. Does that need to match the '93 I'm looking at?

Thanks

I think you're looking at a 1994 model year. The number you have corresponds to a Transmission Control Unit, but the 68U10 matches the p/n at the end of the 1994 ECU. The TCU on a true 1993 unit is either 31036-64U20 or 31036-64U75 and according to some of the information in my file is found in cars in the date range 07/1992-02/1993. My guess is that the salvage yard you're working with is just looking at the date code and assuming that it's a 1993 due to the build date - but from what I understand, the 1994 was released early. Ask the salvage guy to look as tell you if the car had a grille on the hood and chrome trim around the windshield and rear window. I'll bet you a ham sandwich that it does...

So in summary here's what you're looking for:

TCU with p/n 31036-64U20 or 31036-64U75ECU with A18-B10 P72 (JECS #) 23710-71U00 (Nissan P/N)or ECU with A18-A21 P66 (JECS #) 23710-64U05 (Nissan P/N)

The ECUs don't have the Nissan P/N stamped on them, so you'll have to use the JECS #. The TCU typically has both. According to the TSB I'm looking at, the HICAS and Non-HICAS cars (w/o TCS) use the same ECU/TCU combination.

By the way - the 94 also has first gear start, but the gear ratios are different, so you'd get some really weird shift patterns using that TCU.

To answer your question about matching the ECU to the car, I think you probably do. I've heard that the Active ECU will work in a non-active car, or vice versa, but I can't remember which. I'd match it if at all possible.
