I think you're looking at a 1994 model year. The number you have corresponds to a Transmission Control Unit, but the 68U10 matches the p/n at the end of the 1994 ECU. The TCU on a true 1993 unit is either 31036-64U20 or 31036-64U75 and according to some of the information in my file is found in cars in the date range 07/1992-02/1993. My guess is that the salvage yard you're working with is just looking at the date code and assuming that it's a 1993 due to the build date - but from what I understand, the 1994 was released early. Ask the salvage guy to look as tell you if the car had a grille on the hood and chrome trim around the windshield and rear window. I'll bet you a ham sandwich that it does...
So in summary here's what you're looking for:
TCU with p/n 31036-64U20 or 31036-64U75ECU with A18-B10 P72 (JECS #) 23710-71U00 (Nissan P/N)or ECU with A18-A21 P66 (JECS #) 23710-64U05 (Nissan P/N)
The ECUs don't have the Nissan P/N stamped on them, so you'll have to use the JECS #. The TCU typically has both. According to the TSB I'm looking at, the HICAS and Non-HICAS cars (w/o TCS) use the same ECU/TCU combination.
By the way - the 94 also has first gear start, but the gear ratios are different, so you'd get some really weird shift patterns using that TCU.
To answer your question about matching the ECU to the car, I think you probably do. I've heard that the Active ECU will work in a non-active car, or vice versa, but I can't remember which. I'd match it if at all possible.
