Hello everyone,

I was wondering where my transmission control unit is located in my 1991 Q45? Also,
I was wondering where can I find or purchase a 93 first-gear start transmission control unit for my 1991 Q? Or I might just pick one up at the junk yard when I get the chance, so where on the car can I locate this component?

WONDERING can be solved via READING a few thousand historical posts and comments and reading your personal copy of Factory Service Manual included with every brand new 90-93 Q45.

Thanks for letting me know where the TCU is located because when I bought my car, it never came with the service manual. Thank you again!

The "correct" 1st gear start TCU for your car would come from a 1993 Q45. That's the only year that had a transmission identical to yours in terms of gearing, and came with 1st gear start. It's part number will end with 64U20 or 64U75(rare).

You can search for one at www.car-part.com or check out our classified section here. If you have a pull-a-part style salvage yard (www.pullapart.com) nearby, you can get some really good deals that way.

That said, many members have had good experiences with the 94-96 TCU as well. Those years were 1st gear start, but had transmissions with different gear ratios.

The factory service manual for the 1994 and up Q45 is available at www.nicoclub.com/FSM/ - online copies weren't available for the earlier models, but a good bit still applies - torque specs, most component locations, etc.

Thanks for replying and answering my questions, I'll try the TCU's from those later years as well. Also, thanks for the part number on the 1993 TCU's.

Thanks to the members who helped me out with my questions regarding this post. I was able to get a 1993 TCU from the junk yard that had the part number listed from you guys and it works great. Thanks again!

Congrats! Feels great doesn't it ;) . I know when I switched mine, I was very surprised. What's the part number of 1993 TCU you bought? 64U20 or 64U75?

I found the 64U20 TCU, is there a difference in the two different part numbers? I also installed a Hayden Transmission cooler in between the condenser and the radiator. I was surprised with the TCU, IMO, the first gear start is alot better than driving with the stock TCU, and to have a 1991 Q45 that starts in first gear is fortunate to have. Thanks again to everyone who helped me!
