I have a 02 Maxima w/75,000 miles and automatic. My service engine light stayed on and took it to Nissan. They performed the recall fix but the service engine light came on again. They diagnosed it to a bad TCM. I have just ordered one on-line w/18,000 miles on it. Can you tell me where the TCM is located and how to install it? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

welcome to nico. The TCM is located below the radio. But curious here as to what the symptoms were and what led them to the TCM? The recall I assume was the engine sensor campaign.

The TCM came in today.Doesn't look too hard to install but are there any tricks that I need to know about? Try to understand that I am not that mechanically inclined. Have changed a couple of cv joints in a Camry among the regular maintenance to them. If you can, tell me how to get to the TCM in the Maxima and what tools will I need. I really appreciate your prompt response. Back to your quest., Originally the service eng lite came on and I took it to be diagnosed. While being diagnosed they performed the recall procedure. Did not fix the service engine lite. Took it back for more diagnostics and the mechanic came to the conclusion that it was the TCM. So here I am. Thanks in advance.

you will need a plastic trim tool to extract the shift bezel around the shifter and the upper center heater vent above the radio, its in there good so some prying will be nessesary. you will need a phillips to remove the radio and heater controls. 2 screws under where the vents were and 2 screws at the bottom below the radio. once you pop the radio out if you look down in the middle of the now gapping hole in your dash you should see the TCM it is held in by a couple of phillips screws as well. thats it.

I am still curious as to what they found to determine the TCM was bad and what the code was. I have not had to replace an TCM yet on the max due to a check engine light.
