tbelt tension

i know the fsm says loosen tensioner, swing back and forth a couple times and tighten. thats kind of shady to me though, just curious about how much deflection is normal when pushing down on the middle of the belt between the gears? i hear tight is bad, but i dont want to skip a tooth.

every time i have done timing belts i usually have .5mm up and .5mm down! just so it feels tight but not TIGHT enough that anything will bind and **** up!
