Im looking for a straight up answer to a tax question, and couldnt think of a better, more reliable source than my friends at nico!
So here is the situation, I have always just used the 1040ez form to file taxes, never had anything extra to put or any of that. My girlfriend had her parents take care of it when she lived with them, and last year was the first time she did her own taxes (more like i walked her through it), and didnt have anything extra to add, and just used the EZ form like i did.
This year we did everything like normal when we got our w2's and she was getting back about a grand. Today in the mail i got a form from her school (1098-t) and it said she paid like 10 grand to her school over the year. So i got curious and filled out the taxes again and came up with 1700 more than before!
Now i was looking into amending a return (has already been filed) and came up with the 1040X form. I just need to know if this is the proper way to amend her return and get this extra scratch? I assume what i want to do is possible because i have heard commercials before from tax places stating that they will check your already filed taxes for errors to get a better refund.
So if she files this form and whatnot what will they just pay the difference from the grand that is set to be deposited any day now?
EDIT: just read a bit more and found "Check the refund or amount you owe calculations on lines 19 through 24. If you received a bigger refund on your original tax return than you should have, you will need to pay back some of your refund. If your original refund was smaller than you could have received, you will get an additional refund by filing an amended return."
Looks like a yes to me
