Could be a broken valve spring.

Not neccessarily. Open it up and look at them. Check your valve lash. Look at your timing chain and guides.

I have a 91 240sx and had the same problem, plus the noisy timing chain rattling and I went to a mechanic that said I had to replace my timing chain or it would eat a hole in the block and I would lose coolant, I went to another mechanic who drives an s13 240sx himself and he said my timing chain was fine and that the noisy lifters was from oil between the lifters or something? it happens when there is too much oil in the engine I think? anyway he changed the oil to a thicker weight and it quieted considerably. Though he did say if I wanted the noise gone completely, I could have the head re-shimmed.

I apologize if I dont know what Im talking about.

my '90 is making this kind of noise too. it started on sunday last week, and would go in and out. whenever it was making the noise I'd drive around shifting at 3k for fear of something exploding.

My 89 that I've owned for one week taps it's a** off. It only does it about halfway up the Rev range. So is it unanimous (sp?) that heavier oil will help? I was about to get lighter oil with the thought that the valvetrain is not getting enough oil due to poor flow in an oil passage...I thought I could just adjust the valves when I bought it :(Guess being a Honda mechanic for the last 7 years hasn't taught me all I thought it did.go nissan
