Canadian here, coming from an old 2009 Pontiac Vibe, looking for a comfier, smoother, newer SUV with leather seats and decent fuel economy. I'm also 6' 5", which means I don't fit into some models at the trim levels I'm looking at, particularly the ones with sunroofs. And finally, if possible, the car needs to be orange (my wife loves the colour). The Rogue SL has been on my radar for a while; I've test-driven it and it was good (I even mostly fit). There's just a couple of things that are a little confusing to me--

In my area, there are 2017s and 2018s. The dealers with 2017s of course have orange ones among them; and one dealer, strangely, has a 2018 orange SL, even though Nissan Canada doesn't appear to offer the colour in 2018s. I checked the VIN on the car and it is indeed a 2018. So my first question is, how can a dealer have a 2018 orange Rogue when Nissan Canada doesn't make them in that colour?

Second question--the dealer told me the differences between the 2018 SL and 2017 SL is two things: CarPlay, and "premium door-to-door navigation". Can anyone comment on whether the latter is an improvement over the navigation on the 2017? If it's not really that big a deal, I'm not sure I'd want to spend the 1K-2K extra for a 2018 just to get CarPlay (but if you feel it's worth it, convince me!) :)

Last question: I see multiple reports (on Fuelly, etc) that seem to indicate the Rogue's real-world fuel economy is a fair bit worse than its EPA fuel economy numbers. Based on the EPA numbers the Rogue is a no-brainer in that category compared to other rivals (I'm considering a lightly-used top trim Jeep Cherokee or RDX/MDX; I would consider a used Murano SL, but my head hits the roof when sitting in the passenger seat no matter how I manipulate it), but if the actual numbers aren't close to the EPA numbers, then it becomes a much closer competition. Can anyone comment on that?

Thanks!

The MDX is a great SUV and very luxurious. The Rogue does give impressive MPGs for an FWD/AWD SUV. Nissan makes Orange colored Rogues, but its a rare type of breed. The navi on the 2014-2017s are trash; 2018 has a better Navi and of course, you can use Gmaps (or crapmaps if carplay only wants the user to use crapmaps by default). Also, its based on how a person drives the vehicle, so for you it might be higher, if you go light on the throttle.

Hi, thanks. Can you elaborate on what is so much better about the 2018 navi?

I haven't been in a 2018 yet, but all my guessing would be that the dang thing won't freeze when its needed and won't drive you in circles. Also, the graphics are 100x better to my understanding. And, also more options.... Someone here with a 2018 should give a better input, as I have a 2016 though.

ANY change to the Nissan NAV is an improvement. It's pretty useless from my POV.

What I find useful are the safety features, blind spot warning, lane departure, intelligent cruise, etc. Great features!

Do you shovel snow to clear your driveway too? Personally, I don't bother. I just drive over snow that has already fallen from the sky. No use in picking it up to move it.

Should've gotten a mid-2000s Hyundia or an American brand vehicle lol You should've just gotten the SV trim and done deal. :rotflmao

I didn't know how useless the NAV was until I put the Garmin on the windshield and began using it over the Nissan GPS.

I feel ya... I have been with Honda navi for a very long time and never had a single issue. I am still adjusting to this Nissan Navi still, as it is a joke, where the navi cannot recognize some addresses at all. Looks like I might end up doing same thing you did, since I don't like to pay for Sirius for traffic conditions. Also, this navi has been freezing more frequently too, and the people over at corporate said its was a defective HU (never heard of a defective HU)... horrible implementation on their part for the navi... like I said before, Nissan screws up in multiple departments but does well in others.

I see many of you guys talking about the nav system and I agree, it stinks, my Rogue 2011 has it, however I have never used it to go anywhere. Of course the last update to it was 11, I understand that, but in my local area where I do 90% of my driving I know all the major roads, streets, backroads, shortcuts etc. So I have a serious question does everybody drive with the nav system on all the time? Don’t most of you guys drive the same roads to work, stores, school etc? If so aren’t you familiar with the roads that you drive over year after year yet? Or am I missing something here? Why then is a nav unit needed? What did folks do before electronic navigation, drive with a paper map in their lap?

I have to take my mom to the hospital in Rochester NY the hospital is about 2 miles from the freeway. I can get from my house to the hospital exit on memory alone, over 2 hours away. About 2 miles before I get to the exit I start the nav on my iPhone, I have a dash mount device, and I follow the final 2 miles in to the hospital with the iPhone nav. I had to do the same on a trip to Buffalo NY about a month ago. Following the iPhone nav the final,10 miles or so to my destination, but these are places I rarely go to. Buffalo was a first.

If I was buying a new vehicle, I would opt for no nav, I have to shut that annoying screen off anyway while I drive. In my opinion manufacturers could eliminate the whole nav, radio unit from their cars and just make a spot to plug your phone in on the dash and have it mounted so you could easily see it. Using the phone nav, radio and iTunes features through the vehicle sound system.

What am I missing here?

I have to also agree here too, and you were spot on with everything. Can't manufacturers go back to the good old days, when cars were unique and distintive and didn't have crappy Nav systems? I bet Nissan is giving more business to Garmin and TomTom, since they are making crappy OEM Nav systems. I have the screen on my HU set to my audio source. I can't stand how outdated the graphics are and how annoying those inaccurate speed limits are (clearly Nissan thinks that the posted speed limit in a neighborhood is 40 MPH when its 25 MPH).

I have a 2018 Rogue. The NAV sucks. It sucks so bad, that I don't even use it. There is nothing "premium" about it.
With that said the 2018 does have android auto which works with google maps. The 2017 does not have android auto.

As far as an orange Rogue in Canada...might be possible they acquired one from a U.S. dealer.

My best gas mileage so far is 32.5 mpg. Sticker on the window said 33mpg. I'm OK with that.

Almost all factory nav systems are garbage compared to something like Google maps. The 18 rogue has an updated/better infotainment system than the 17. My advice to the op would be to go and drive a bunch of similar vehicles (Cr-v, rav-4 etc) and see which one you like most. The rogues are a good vehicle, but very underpowered and the cvt is light years behind some other auto makers

GPS? My killer is 'How can Nissan (or others like GM) have you on a subscription fee for GPS ? While many other systems Tom Tom, Magellan offer a GPS fully covered (meaning updates and all information on store locations ect) for a one time cost. FREE lifetime updates!! Even cell phones are providing the infos FREE. You spend over 40Gs on a car (mine is 2017 Rogue) and find yourself involved with a monthly fee to maintain your GPS up-to-date using Nissan Connect ??? What the ? I wish that Magellan could make a DVD where they could sell and update the vehicle with their GPS system. Isn't it all computer software anyway? Please FREE the market.
You see, the Rogue GPS has a basic gps system with limited area location information. So after the initial 6 months, you need to subscribe to . . . Nissan Connect where they will provide added information and roads, cities details. If not subscribe then you are left with a below quality system GPS.
Eg here :
in my city area, I was looking while in the car for eyewear Opticians stores. GPS found 2 stores 23 - 25 km away. In actual fact, there were one less then 1 km away and 5 different stores within 7 km. $40,000 car with a $1 GPS scrap What's wrong here?

You do know that this Navigation system is horrible regardless if you do or don't get the Nissan Connect Services. And yes, I do agree, its not worth the money to pay for those services, however, all brands are doing this thing, so its a regular thing in the business.

I was not happy with the Navigation system that I had in the 2016 Altima that I owned. It even tried to take my down a dirt road that was a longer route than the paved roads. The navigation system on my current 2018 Rogue is a great improvement but is not as good as the 4 year old Garmin with life time map updates that I have in my Tacoma.
