In August, a couple buddies and I will be taking the QX4 from Virginia to Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico for the ultimate mountain biking destinations out there.

Currently, the 99.5 QX4 has 115k mi on it and its running fine. I have no doubts that it'll make it the whole way, but does anyone have any mechanical tips or anything to watch out for when driving the QX4 long distances in the summer? We are planning an oil change somewhere in there.

If you're curious, here's a rough GMap of what we're gonna do: http://tinyurl.com/5ho299

Timing belt, all drive belts, and water pump changed at 104k, plugs at 110k with NGK V-series, fuel filter at 112k. Engine air filter and cabin air filter are new too thanks to you Fueler :

Rear differential fluid is also newly changed, fuel filler tube recall service also done. Transmission fluid in the pan was drained and refilled.

Should I be worried about doing a engine coolant flush or complete transmission flush? Distributor cap/rotor replacement? I have no records of such maintenance.

sounds like u have all your bases covered. The coolant was probably mostly replace when they did your timing belt and water pump (gotta remove the radiator at least partially)

Was it you to whom i sold the cabin air filter?

If I were you,. id just bring a few extra plugs, oil, duct tape, wd40, and tools. You never know what might happen. Last excursion I took to the mountains, my AC compressor seized, and the rubber belt started burning and smokin on the pulley. temporary repair was as wasy as cutting the belt.

i wouldnt worry about the ignition cap/rotor... havent heard of many problems in our year QX4, and if it does fail, just get it at an auto parts store. I highly doubt youll have to worry bout that.

id check tires for tread depth, dont forget to make sure the spare is full of air. a can of fixaflat might come in handy. plus look at the amount of pad left on the brakes, thats alot of mountain driving which can take a toll on a older set of brake pads.

Tires are good, but thanks for the tip on checking the brake pads! Hadn't even thought of that.

Should I worry about checking the drums? What's the best method to do that?

Hmmm.... If I were going to tune up my QX4 I'd:

Tires, including the spare, maybe rotatemake sure you have the jack, lug wrench, etc. Test the mechanism that raises and lowers the sparecheck the brake rotors, pads, calipers and brake fluid. Might be a good idea to change out the fluid.change the oil and filer.change the fuel filter and air filter.check belts and pulleyscheck the dist cap, wires and plugs for cracks or marks.check the VC "screws" to make sure they're tight. Mine seem to work loose.Check the coolant for a good 50/50 mix. I don't know about "flushing" but perhaps a drain a refill.you can drain the diffs and refillyou can drain the transmission and refillyou can drain the transfer case and refillthis time of year I'd check the ac system

I don't know what else I'd do. Also, I'm kinda leary of doing a lot of stuff right before a trip because I worry about needing to retighten things in a few hundred miles.
