I should probably elaborate on that...

That is 1/4" steel plate, full penetration MIG welded to the spindle. It is 2 layers thick, making it effectively 1/2" thick.

Its not going anywhere. Its thicker and stronger than a bolted aluminum caliper bracket (for a mustang install) that came with it will ever be.

Plus I'm not a bad welder, the pictures and that angle just make it look bad.

Engineering advice from an expert on painting valvecovers?

First off I want you to know I am not trying to be an @ss I am just concerned about your safety.

Two pieces of 1/4" plate welded on the sides together does not equal 1/2" plate. However that is not the biggest concern here.

There is a procedure for welding to cast iron / steel and MIG welding is not it. You have to use a special type of rod, heat the cast part constantly and cool it slowly.

Your weld WILL FAIL. When that happens you will lose the caliper inside your wheel which could cause instant lockup if it gets hung in the wheel and when the line is broken you will lose pressure so the rear brakes wont work either.

I think you said you had adapter brackets. I strongly advise getting another set of spindles and use the adapter brackets as long as they are machinded billet. Also make sure you use Grade 8 hardware.

I run billet aluminum adapter brackets on the front of my car for my 13" rotors and have done some seriously hard braking from some really high speeds. It works as long as you have good hardware and lock-tite everything.

Once again just concerned for your safety and the others around you. With V8 power you need reliable brakes.

240 spindles are made of steel.

Anyways, I didn't have any problems with cracking or fracturing. I wire wheeled all the welds to inspect for cracks and they looked very smooth with good penetration.

I would have used adapter brackets if they were for the 240, but the ones that came in the auction were for a mustang.

Good built.

Not the prettiest welds

Why did you weld the gusset for the motor mounts to the chassis and the cross member? Are you assuming that the cross member will never need to be taken off again?

What kind of numbers can you get out of this engine NA with some nice cams and tuning?

How did you score the engine that cheap? In my neck of the woods those engines go for 700-1500 from a junkyard

I do believe they are made of iron. Again, just looking out for your safety. Build looks great BTW.

Alot of cobra guys get into the low to mid 400's with cams, exhaust, intake, and a good tune.

Bump the compression to the 11:1 area, port the crap out of the heads/intake manifold or upgrade to better flowing units(and port them), put in whale pen15 sized cams and a very good tune and mid 500's are possible but very expensive.

I second that this is the proper procedure for welding cast metal. Since these are brakes I would make 100% sure that nothing will fail.

I'm about 99.9% sure they are forged steel. The color of the metal doesn't look like iron and they tool like steel.

Also, why is it that whenever anyone modifies the spindle for quicker steering and cuts the steering arm shorter, nobody seems to get after them on how they welded it back together?

The spindles aren't made of iron. That would be stupid. Iron is too brittle to take shock loads that come from the wheel. The spindles are steel, they weld fine.

And yes, I don't plan on taking the cross member off ever. Once I figured out that I was missing some bolts for it, then checked and the bolts were broken off inside the frame, I decided it was a good idea just to weld the cross member solidly to the frame and gusset it all.

I'm rebuilding my 4.6 DOHC. I bought another motor because mine threw a rod. Long story short, I have 2 extra B-heads. Email me if your interested. One of the heads has a bent valve though, so they do need work. After I figure out which two I'm going to use, I'll sell you the other 2 on the low low.

Pull a part has engines at set prices. The standard price for an 8 cylinder engine is $135.79 with a $20 core charge. I set a reminder to tell me when there was a mark viii lincoln in stock and went and pulled the motor when I got the email.

Its a PITA to take a motor out of a car with hand tools and a chain winch. I wish my brother got his electric impact earlier.

As far as the internals go, I got such a good deal because I trolled ebay for a while before the good deal came up.

problems fitting the hood is a good problem to have in this case, looks badass

Yeah, I got that from your last post.

If I get different heads, they're going to be newer cobra heads.

My brother wanted an "easy button" as some kind of instant drifto switch, I think this is the next best thing.

everything is looking good but those brake caliper brackets still got me a little worried if you had to make a panic stop at 80 mph in a V8 240. I hope they hold up though

I want to see some updates! I get my 4.6 back from the machinist soon (just had a new sleeve put in with my new forged internals!). I want to see this thing run. I've always wanted to see a modular powered 240!!!
