Well I've had this issue since I bought my 96 pathfinder a year ago. Got it for cheap due to a blown head on pass side, disassembled and sent heads out for machining, reassembled then sat for a month or two. Disassembled because cam seals were not put back in, then again due to suspicion of valve seals failing; possibly creating the smoke. At this point it has all new seals, resurfaced heads, and valve train should be spotless, new distributor, redone timing and I am almost to a point to giving up on it. Any ideas?

And note; compression test was solid, smoke looks like it's oil/coolant burning and smells overly fumey

So there was no change in the problem when you put in new valve seals, correct?

My guess is you will need to deck the block. If the heads were done properly, thats about all thats left. Compression is good, so rings don't seem suspect. Were the heads checked for cracks?

Also, if there is warping in the block, torquing a newly resurfaced aluminum head down may warp the head again. Just a thought.

Yes valve seals did not improve the condition. Heads were indeed checked. What is decking the block, resurfacing?

Yes, the block surface is machined and trued. Not sure if overheating caused the engine problems in the first place, but that can warp the block.

You should be able to take the passenger side head back to the shop that did the work and have them recheck it to make sure it is still flat / true.

Also, inspect the block very very carefully for some type of defect in the surface that is going to allow a leak into the cylinder.

You might also head over to car-part.com. Input your vehicle info, select "engine" as the part, and look for wrecking yards in your area with used engines. The lowest priced ones are under 300.00. Might be easier to just do an engine swap if you can find a good deal.

I was afraid that would be the outcome but at least I know. I appreciate your advice and knowledge very much 4xq
