Hi Guys i have just been given a 1996 d21 2.7l diesel...the speedo and tach are not working and also the battery light on the dash is on..in am assuming the battery light is just the alternator gone..but was wondering if the 2 could be linked...is it just fuses that run the speedo and tach or do i have another problem.

Only one fuse runs the taillights. Do you have power at the fuse? Power at the brake switch? Is the brake pedal making contact with the brake light switch?

It could be a faulty switch. The HBs are known for burning up the headlight switches over time. My 95 came with a bad switch and the previous owner couldn't figure it out so he started jumping wiring around, lucky it wasn't too bad. I replaced the switch and the lighting returned to normal...after a few wiring fixes.

I merged your two topics because I think you might get some more help from other members this way.

I can't figure out how to change the switch out. All I can find on YouTube and the Internet is for other types of brake light switches none like my 01' it's annoying because it's right there but I guess I just don't know the trick to it. Any one willing to try to explain this to me?
