96 Q45 160k

Tach has become a bit flaky. Will not read(drop) below 2k rpm's even at idle. Normally reads 600-750 rpm's at idle. It does increase from 2k on up when revving engine. At $120 just for removal and unknown costs for repair I am wondering if it's worth the effort. Thanks.

Several questions:

1. With the engine not running and the ignition switch on, does the tach needle sit at zero, or is it still showing some RPMs?

2. When it starts working above 2000 RPMs, does the needle move smoothly, or does it look jerky (like maybe it's binding)?

On the Y33 version, there is a test to confirm that the tach is getting a valid signal from the engine speed sensor (via the ECM). There's probably a similar test for the G50 version.
