You are confusing two differant posters.xru5tyx said his aftermarket tach was doing the same thing.clss240 (the original poster) made no mention of an aftermarket tach.
If an aftermarket tach is taped into the coil and cuts out but the car is still running then you have a power or ground problem with the tach instal. Or posibly the pickup wire is not connected solidly.
If a STOCK tach is not reading correctly but the car is still running, then it could be a ground issue or a bad cluster or posably a bad ECU.
