When I first got my 95 240sx, the tach would go to 3,000 RPM and would stay between 3000-4000 until I stopped the car when it would go to zero. About a month ago it started working flawlessly. Last night I started the engine up and the tach flew to 3000. Also, about a week ago a light that had appeared burned out in the middle of the gauge cluster, started working again. Any suggestions as to where the problem with the tach is and what is going on with the light bulb? Could it be a general electrical problem with the guages? Thanks for any help.

the gauge light is prob its own problem. check the bulb first.

is your car automatic? what happens when you rev the motor? cold/hot?

The car is a manual and it does not matter if the engine is hot or cold. I start the car and the tach goes to about 3000 and it will never go below that until I turn the car off and it goes to 0. When warm I can tell the car is idling at about 700-800, but the tach still reads 3000. If I rev the engine, the tach will go up, but only to a maximum of about 4000. I can have the engine at near redline, and the tach won't go above 4000. This problem is either there or its not, meaning that either it works perfectly, or it acts all messed up, no in between. Once in a while, when this problem is happening, I can turn the car off and then turn it right back on and the tach will work fine. Normally however, if it is working fine, it will do so for weeks (months), and when is not working, it will do so for weeks before it acts fine again. Thanks for helping.

if your engine is running ok then there is a 98% chance that your tach is just shot.
