Tach question (not technically specific)

My friend let me borrow his 05 WRX today to run errands while I wait for a few parts in the mail. I noticed that his tach is very, uh, exact? quick? I don't know. When you change gears it slams into place with a great precision. It's tough to explain.

Anyway, my tach doesn't do that at all. If I get aftermarket gauges and build a custom cluster mount, would the new tach be as good as his? I assume that it's the stepper motor technology that allows it to be so quick. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't the actual signal coming from the motor that makes mine so laggy. Undoubtedly it's that 13 year old gauge cluster that needs to be ditched.
