tach is going crazy

Hi all, I drive a 1995 infiniti g20t. My tach is going crazy in all gears, even when it's idling in neutral its jumping up and down. I would like to know if theres an alternative to buying a whole new cluster, because I'm a car newbie and wouldnt be able to put it in myself from a junkyard. And to have it done from a professional costs 500+ dollars. I appreciate your help so much!!!!

note: If it's sensors or something that can cause this, that would be great, as I could keep my odometer too.

Check out ebay for a used cluster. If you can use a screw driver, you can replace the cluster.

When my alternator was going in my old Honda, the tach would go mental.

The electromechanical gauge goes bad. The tachometer has to be replaced...the part is something like $450 and labor is about an hour. I had mine replaced to the tune of $570 but it works great now.
