i am playing with a 180sx gauge cluster to hook up to my rb20det to read right and to make the 180KMH--->180MPH and since the tach reads to 9K its much better for our engines. There are variable resistors for each circuit i have opened them up I will get pics soon....

OHH I JUST FIGURED THE ISSUE WAS LIKE THE RB20'S..... IF ITS AN ELECTRIC SPEEDO TAKE YOUR CAR TO A SPEEDO SHOP AND HAVE IT ADJUSTED TO THE SIGNAL. SPLICE THE RB25 PLUG ONTO THE KA SENSOR HARNESS WHICH ALREADY RUNS DIRECTLY TO THE CLUSTER..... THEN TAKE YOUR CAR TO A SPEEDO SHOP FOR THE ADJUSTMENT.

For the 300zx sensor you may also try

http://www.z1motorsports.com

They carry quite a range of used parts, so I'd give them an email or call them and see if they'd have a sensor.

Run a pull up resistor on it and the tach will read. You'll have to calibrate it for 4-> 6 cyl, or a C33 tacho (bolt in)

Its a 10 min job either way..

a pull up resistor from +12v on the input?

10k resistor bridged across 12v+ and the tach signal from ECU -> Dash.

i dont get it, i stuck a 10k resistor in the tach signal like this and it didnt read at all...

----tach signal---------><---10k resistor-----><---------tach signal----

can you draw a simple diagram on how this would work thanks

no, a pull up resistor is from positive power.

+12v-------------[10k resistor] tach signal--------------^----------{TACH}

the resistor goes between +12v and the tach signal line. you do not interrupt the tach signal line, you just connect the other end of the resistor to the line before the tach.

what your going to do is place positive power on one end of the resistor, and connect the other end of the resistor to the tach signal line, creating a "3 way intersection"

Will this tach fix also work on my SOHC tach from my 1990 240sx

I tried the 10k resistor on my RB20 in S14 and noticed absolutely no difference in the signal except that it seems to respond a bit slower. Still shows idle around 1500-2000 rpm (which is waaay high).

Read my post at the top of this page. A pull up will get it to read.. it will STILL have tobe calibrated for 4>6 cylinder.

Ok, my mistake. It was already "reading" without any pullup resistor. I put the resistor on because I thought you meant it would make it read correctly (or closer to correctly) for a 6 cylinder.

So, in my experience, the tach "reads" fine on the S14 with RB20, but it reads high. I do not know how to accurately calibrate it.

ya my tach reads fine it is hooked up it just reads 1.5X higher...there HAS to be away to adjust the signal so it reads correctly... any ideas??

There is a pot on the back of the tacho.. tweak it.. the scale of the factory tacho based to rpm is up the whack anywy.. I'd calibrate it so it reads correct up high.. ie 6-7000rpm

Nismo, do you know what car your tach came out of? I went to a local junk yard here and found a couple out of some Maxima's which are VG30E's. The Stanza's are the KA24. If you can find out for me I would really appreciate it. Also is the only wire you spliced the one for the tach signal? I used the tach from the Maxima and it reads at about 1,000 rpm but then when I rev the motor the tach stays at the same place and does not climb at all.

are you sure you spliced in the right wire?

I'm pretty sure. I spliced it to pin #7 which is labeled Tach. engine speed.

we have the same problem.. and I can't seem to figure it out .. either,,

1990 240SX coupe. my wire was done by.. mckinney.. reads zero..mphzero..rpm..

r33 tach will not bolt into the stock cluster without modifying it

But bet if you took out the R33 tach, switched gauge faces and put it in the 240 cluster it would work.
