Tach acting very strange

the tach in my 95 hardbody 4x4 is behaving badly. most of the time it doesnt work at all then all of a sudden it it goes nuts and every now and then it will work normal for a few minutes. what should i check or is it shot and in need of replacing. can the tach be replaced by itself or do i need to replace the whole gauge pod if its needed? thanks randy
