Ive got this transmission for a 1989 240SX sitting around. Can anybody tell me if it came from a SOHC or DOHC motor? Its a manual 5-spd, stamp on the side labels it as the TA71B #5.

Did the 1989 coupes only come with SOHC engines, or did they have the DOHC engines in them as well?

5speed transmission is the same between SOHC and DOHC, so doesn't matter.

Car: 1991 240sx 155000 miles on it. Almost done with manual swap. Just need shaft clutch and brake pedal.

Hey I have that same transmission. i have a 1991 240sx and im almost done with the manual swap. The guy I bought my TA17B#5 from said its from a 95 but he also beat me on some other stuff that I found out later on. I just want to know what year the TA17B#5 was used in. Is it indeed for a S14 or a S13??

An easy way to Identify an S14 transmission is to look at the bellhousing for the crank sensor holes.
The stamp on the gear box should not really matter. But if it says TA71B #5 then its a 95+.

Does that mean that a TA71B#2 is a '92 or later? I'm looking for a rebuild kit for the #2. I have 2 of these and one jumps out of 5th gear when not under power or compression. The other one needs synchros for all gears. Any Help out there for this problem?

This is not a correct statement. The SOHC and DOHC are almost the same on the outside. The s14 DOHC has a 4th switch called the top switch. The s13 DOHC/SOHC transmission only has 3 switches (reserve switch , overdrive switch and, neutral switch). On the inside of the S13/S14 transmission they have different gear ratios. The s14 DOHC has wider 4th gear(input shaft) and S14 DOHC has a synchronized reverse. The s13 DOHC/SOHC does not have a synchronized reverse....ETC

You will need to get a transmission rebuild kit with synchros and new 5th gear and counter gear. do you have a picture of the transmission. s14 transmission has 4 switches plus speedo sensor on the out. The s13 has 3 switches plus speedo sensor
