dropped my SR in today and the compressor wheel has a little bit of shaft play. I can move it up and down very slightly with a screwdriver.

What's the worst that happens... I get lots of oil going through my valve cover (not sure if that's where it would go) or will my turbo explode sending me to a perilous doom.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Depends on the amount you speak of, is this a mm or two or something larger. The loose wheel would be a sign of seals going bad possibly, but this will only result in some oil escaping out the turbine or into the intercooler piping. The wheel will not fly into the engine or out of the turbo.

Although if you let it go for too long like I have before you can shatter the cartridge. Which rarley ever happens. I drove that turbo to its fu(kin death bed. You wanna talk about a noisy s.o.b. Anyways, if you see some smoke it is proly the seals on the turbo but have you done a compression check on this motor yet? Need to as soon as possible so that if it is smoking you can determine if its the turbo or the motor or both.

mine had a small amount of shaft play (<2mm) and it still boosts and works fine. I had a little bit of oil coming out at first, but that is no longer happening.
