I got my S13 clip on wednesday and I was finally able to inspect my turbo today. Now my question is, is the turbine supposed to spin very freely? I tried to spin mine but it was almost like it was stuck.. I mean it spins and all but you have to push it, it won't spin on its own if you give it a nudge. I was thinking that maybe there needs to be oil in there and there probably isn't any since the motor has been sitting for who knows how long in Japan/on a ship/in a warehourse/ect. So, is this normal? Or is my turbo shot? *crosses fingers :(*

Thats how my turbo was on my clip.you had to push the wheel just to get it to move a little, and there was alot of thick, black oil coming out,I put oil in and it helped a little, but i just ended up buying a new one.used t25 that is.-good luck-

I got a replacement turbo with my clip and it spins pretty easily. A quick flick with your finger will have it do about 1-2 full revolutions before stopping with no oil in it. It's really clean too, should be a good lil' hairdrier for a while.

The one on the clip didn't "whistle" when revving it up, and I couldn't even get the compressor wheel to budge with some vice grips on the shaft(lots more torque than the turbine ever provides). .

if it doesnt spin freely, its on the path to a sieze.

one thing you might want to do is remove the oil feed line, and spray wd40 or some other really light weight solvent in there to try to remove some of the carbon/varnish/gum ect...

move the shaft around while lubing it [no, not that shaft] to try to free it up.

you might want to fit a new turbo in your buget for the future.

It's in the bidget, but wasn't planning on it for a year or so.. hmm I'll try the WD40 idea. I think the place I got the motor from will give me a turbine if it's shot.. they better~

if its sticking, its usually the center section [bearings].

another thing ive used to clean up centers is pyroil engine flush.

any harsh 5 minute engine flush should do the job. if you use engine flush to clean the bearings, i usually mix it 25% flush/75% diesel just in case because i always worry that the acetone in the flush might harm the seals if i use it straight.

its probably fine to use it straight, but im paranoid about things like that.

Well I took out the oil lines and sprayed WD 40 in it while spinning the turbine for like 10 minutes.. it helped although slightly. I'll try the pyroil idea. Also I was thinking that once I put the motor in my car (this weekend) and start running it and what-not, maybe the bearings will free up. Just an idea and a hope, but we'll see.

one idea i might try is to pour some motor oil into the oil inlet and let the bearings soak up the oil. Work the turbine back and forth and let the oil work them free. just be careful. You don't want to score up the shaft or the bearings.

In my experience, though, once a turbo has frozen, that's it. Game over. But if you manage to get it moving again with no scraping noises, let us know.

Well it's not completetly frozen, I mean it's not TO hard to spin it but it can't free wheel. So my hope remains. :)

A good test is to listen for it after you shut the engine off, you should hear it spinning for 5-10 seconds until it finally spools down and stops. Take off your air filter and listen through that pipe. Also, if you have bad boost lag, then you gots some turbo problems.

Well it's not in the car yet so I can't run it. But I'm pretty sure it's bad.

Heh I have airtools at my shop and so what I did was pour oil into the return line and just spun the turbine with the airtool for like 3 mionutes.. worked pretty well. It spins much more feely now, although now as good as it should be. I think it might be good for some time now
