My service shop only uses syn blend and conventional oil. I've waited till my second oil change to use a full synthetic. All of my prev cars had synthetic. Do any of you bring your own oil for them to use? If so, do they charge you the full price?

I bring my own oil and the dealer discounts the price of the oil change to reflect "less 5 quarts" so I end up paying more for the full synthetic but the guys at the dealer are real cool about me bringing my own oil...

I buy my own oil (6 quarts of Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W-40, but I plan to try 5W-30 this time around) from Kragen or Pep Boys. The Infiniti dealer discounts me some dollar amount for them not using 6 qts of their dino 5W-30 oil. It is 6 quarts in my case, because my V-8 takes that amount of oil for a change (also including the filter being changed), the V-6 is less, of course.

On alternate times, when I am just changing engine oil and not having anything else done on the car, I take my own oil, my OEM filter and crush washer (which I buy in 6 packs from http://www.everythinginfiniti.com) and take it to local shops. Then I pay about $10 to $12 for the work to be done.

If I could raise my car and get under it safely (I do not like jack stands ... a mild earthquake in the area, and I might die if the car fell off the stands ), I would change the oil myself ... it is easy enough to do!

get some ramps , and just use e brake and shimmy the back wheels

i HATE jacks also , an OEM jack from my parents maxima had failed causing it to drop the car and nearly took off my foot..

I dont take my own oil , the shop i go to is owned by my brothers friends and they keep a pretty good assortment of oils for different asian cars

Oh, most definitely agreed! . I have a hydraulic jack that is way better. But, even then, it is only used to raise the cars to rotate tires. In theory, I could use jack stands to support the car to get under it, but I don't like those either. My imagination runs wild as to what could happen if the jack failed or a mild earthquake rocked the car off. A lift is way safer, since you have, in theory, a few more seconds to get out of the way of a car falling off a lift.

I'd like to do my own oil change to make sure that everything is done right, and also to teach my son, etc., so a ramp is probably the way I would do it for sure (like Gimli G35 mentioned). But, given that the local shops charge me $10 to $12 (depending on the place I go) for the work, and they deal with the used oil and filter too, it has been far simpler to be lazy!

I use a 3 ton hydraulic jack and ramps. I jack up each side & place the ramp under the front wheel. Then i move the jack to the other side & place the ramp under the other front wheel. This works out real well. I change my own oil every 3k- 3.5k miles using mostly Pennzoil 5w-30 2006 G35 6 Speed manual 36k miles
