Synthetic motor oil is not going to hinder your performance. The only possible way any type of oil will hinder performance is if you used the wrong weight and put to much or to little oil in the engine. You should consider a few things when choosing what type/weight of oil to use. What type of climate will the car be driven in, how hard will the car be driven and how many miles are on the motor. It is not recommended to switch to synthetic until the engine break in period is complete. You mentioned Mobil 1, which is a highly recommended synthetic oil. I use it in my turbo B13, 15w-50 to be exact. I did use it in the Spec V also, but when I took it to Nissan for an oil consumption test, they used Penzoil 5w-30. Its seems that the car burned more oil with synthetic. Now is that a fluke, I don't know. There are too many stories of the QR burning oil and even more theories on why. What kind of car are you referring to?

I run synth in my B15 SE, countless people run it in Spec V's as well, it's an upgrade just like in any other modern car unless you're burning oil badly.

Heck I run Mobil 1 5W30 in my Sentra and it's only a 1.8 Just once you decide to run it whatever you can't change it or you will harm the engine.
