Hey all,

There's always lots of discussions about synthetic oil, regular oil etc on here. I have my first oil change coming up, and have been doing some digging around, and came across a website I thought was interesting. It's a sort of ongoing home-grown test of functional life of different synthetics. The main page is a bit unorganized - skip through to the test results links:

Not here. Oil change #1 was done at the dealer and they used my favorite Valvoline 10/30. $44.34 total, including a complete wash and vacuum, 27 point check and a new drain washer.

Actually, considering what Q45Tech has said about the expected longevity of today's cars*, (I think it was in the G37 forum), the advantages of synthetic oil have flown out the window. Save your money and use the dino goo.

*because of mechanical systems being replaced by electronic systems, the extreem longevity of yesterday's cars may not occur with today's. At least, that is the way I understood it. Maybe he'll stop by and correct me on this.

I agree with you also. Synthetic oil in my opinion is a waste of money.

If you change your oil every 3k -4k miles why waste so much money on oil using synthetic?

I have mobil 1 in mine too. If you don't want to do it yourself, you can buy the oil yourself and have your mechanic change it. It'll save you some.

Here's a video from Mobil's website. Results are pretty amazing and I've mentioned some of them before, such as the part numbers still visible after 100,000 miles.

I've used dino oil since I've bought my car, but I think with the first oil change this spring I'll be changing over to synthetic with about 12,000 miles. I'll buy it myself so I'm not getting charged an arm and a leg for it.

JimW:

I have used dino, blend, and synthetic. I can tell you with great confidence that synthetic, as far as power and gas mileage is concerned, especially if you flog or want to flog the car, is the best. Early morning warm up is even faster with synthetic. Problem is, synthetic is a lot more expensive.

I can't tell you if my engine will last longer than any engine using dino. But I can tell you that my car is more responsive with synthetic than with dino or blend. If the decision was between blend and dino, then I would have gone with dino, as I did not see any difference in gas milage between dino and blend, eventhough my engine felt a little more responsive with a blend.

However, with synthetic, it was like night and day. I flog my car routinely and I can't afford to use anything that will take away more power than is required. If you drive gently and reasonably, then dino maybe for you. I am extremely attentive to a car's performance and the way it drives. so, I say these things in confidence.

In fact, I actually change my synthetic oil every 3000 miles---a little extreme some might argue. Some will say it is waste but I disagree. There is nothing as good as fresh oil and filters in a car. Fresh oil and filters keep dirt and sand out of the engine especially if you have an exposed air filter, as I, such as an after-market filter.

The other issue is cost. well, this is where the rubber meets the road on the decision to either use dino versus synthetic. IMHO, my car makes me so happy when I flog it, and it brings me so much joy, that I feel i should give it the best. So, cost is a non-existent thing in my book, as far as my G-35 Coupe is concerned. I really love the car.

Again, the decision is ultimately yours. dino oil will work. But it will come at some sacrifice. If you can live with the sacrifices, I would say, go for it! Just my 2 cents!

BTW, I had a revised VQ35DE engine installed in my car, and I have been using synthetic oil since 3,000 miles. The engine has about 8,000 miles now and it works perfectly well.

I've heard that changing over to synthetic should happen relatively early in the life of the engine or else there can be sealing issues.

Your thoughts...

You should switch to synthetic oil only after Your engine is broken in.I.E. , Your rings are seated in. Using synthetic too early in an engine, will actually prolong or inhibit the ring seat process. You can play it safe and wait till Your third oil change on a new car. Some manufacturers that use synthetic from the factory, actually break in their engines with conventional oil, before they install them.Sometimes, old engines will develope unforeseen leaks, when switching to synthetic oil, but that doesnt' usually happen till an engine is pretty wore out.

Your thoughts...
hmm... well, what I've heard was that new engines need mineral [dino] oil during the beginning - first 3000 miles or so - for the rings to seal properly - to wear properly... then you can change to semi or synthetic without any sealing issues.

for example, my Audi techs [back when I had the 04 S4 with V8] tell me that to keep the dino oil in the engine - to properly wear and seal in the rings / wear the crankshaft, camshaft, etc. Then it is "Ok" to use synthetic. They said that synthetic is not necessary... but it is offered at an additional price.

My feeling on changing oil too often is more than a waste of money/ environment than spending the extra $ on synthetic.

As I've stated before, Synthetic oil is really not that much more than regular oil... especially if you change it yourself - - - [I know... this means getting off my lazy *** - but Me, Myself and I don't mind ]...

I just bought 5.4 litres of Mobil 1 --- 1 bottle of 4.4 litre + 1 bottle bonus - - at WALMART [yeah i go there once in a while]... for $31.99 + tax.That is: under $6.00 per bottle.

I lease my car ... and will most likely will upgrade to a new G when time comes - So I'm not even going to keep my car - it is not really about longevity... it is more about my confidence when I push it to the 7400rpm redline... and the fact that I've paid for a sports car [didn't I?]... so treat it like a sports car - stretch its legs once in a while!... or else just get a Mercedes Benz C230 Kompressor - which still has ample power... but why get the power when there is no need --- plus, the G is BAD on gas - as bad as my Audi S4-with a V8 + awd -lol.

Anyways... to each their own... and - yes, just my 2 pennies + 1 penny for common cents*

L

Ps. I buy only 94 octane gas - cuz I like it

PS... prices at Walmart: I'm in Canada... so $31.99 for 5.4 litres is a good deal here :0 --- usually $40 for 4.4 litres.

Oh noesss@ the dreaded what kind of Oil I should use thread.

I have seen many an argument and fights started over this.

From Synthetic to regular 10W 30.

I changed my oil in my SHO every 3k miles and used just plain ol 10W 30.Unfortunately she blew a head gasket and I just got tired of wrenching on her, time and money and my time is not worth it to spend all weekend in the garage and my money would go a lot further in a newer car.171k is way beyond the life of an average SHO should last. However I have heard of them going to 250K+ (I am from Missouri)

But to throw salt into this resurected discussion, AMSOIL seems to be the first oil that a lot of hard core drivers swear by. I have no experience with that oil but if you ever run into an AMSOIL user you better run.

They are worst than Apple fanatics and right behind them are Volkswagon/ Audi owners and BMW motorcycle riders.

Royal Purple for me. Never had any problems and it's been proven to give a few HP.
